Jake Dixon took pole position for the first race of the Showdown at Oulton Park after championship leader Leon Haslam was scuppered by a technical problem.
The RAF Reserves Kawasaki rider set a time 1:33.758 and will line-up on the front row with Tommy Bridewell and Luke Mossey.
Dixon's fellow title fighters Josh Brookes, Glenn Irwin and Bradley Ray start in 4th, 5th and 7th respectively.
It came after Haslam could not post a time at all after his bike failed him. It means he will have to start from the back of the grid in Race 1 on Sunday, which starts at 1.35pm.
Race 2 is at 3.50pm.
