Mackenzie clinched his first BSB pole with a fastest lap of 53.549secs ahead of 2015 champion Josh Brookes who had to retire due to a technical problem, despite qualifying for Q2.
Race 1 is at 13.30 on Sunday, with Race 2 at 16.30 in the most open championship for years.
