In a carbon copy of what happened last year, Sebastien Bourdais has taken the first round of his battle with points leader Paul Tracy by snatching pole position from under his now, and if 2004 is to be completely repeated, then Bourdais is odds on for victory.
However, qualifying didn't run smoothly for Bourdais as an error 15 minutes into the session almost cost him dearly. A brush with the wall at Turn 6 saw the Frenchman return to the pits for quick repairs, but thanks to the quick work of his Newman/Haas team, he was out quickly and fighting for pole.
"I wasn't expecting the car to push like that," he said. "I got out of the pits and the front washed out. The McDonald's crew did an awesome job to put the thing together, to bring it back on time so I could have the chance to challenge for the pole position. We pulled it off."
Tracy was inconsolable in second as he lost pole position for his home race for a second year in succession, and to the same driver! The Canadian was the quickest driver out there but was held up by Cristiano Da Matta car on his quickest lap, leaving him to settle for second behind Bourdais.
"That was really tough to take," Tracy moaned. "I was up two tenths on Sebastien with two corners to go when Cristiano balked me. I'm really disappointed with him. He looked like he decided to slow down to launch a lap with me right behind him and I had to back out of it.
"I slowed down to get some room and get ready to try again but then the Red Flag came out and that was it," he added. "But the car is better than yesterday and we'll be strong in the race. We just have to get through the first corner and see how things play out."
Britain's Justin Wilson looks set for a strong race after his RuSport team did a great job to transform his car from an ill-handling machine into a possible pole sitter, setting a best time just 0.002 seconds slower than Bourdais to take third on the grid.
"In the pre-qualifying session the car really started to come good," he said. "We didn't touch it from then until qualifying, we just added new tires. I'm pleased we turned it around from yesterday, and my engineer and crew worked really hard for me.
"It's disappointing to lose one place to two-thousandths, but to lose two!" he added. "The car had more in it, but I made a slight mistake on the last turn of my last lap and it cost me about a half of a tenth. With this series being as competitive as it is, that half of a tenth was huge."
