Stumps: India 473-8 (Gill 110, Rohit 103)

Although England had a couple of magic moments, it was a day where India took the Test away from the tourists ending the day on 473-8, with a lead of 255.
Beginning the day 83 runs behind, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill extended their partnership to 171 at lunch.
Ben Stokes, with the first ball after lunch and his first of the series, bowled Rohit with a beauty and then James Anderson bowled Gill in similar fashion in the next over.
This exposed young duo Devdutt Patikkari (65) and Sarfaraz Khan (56) but they showed themselves to be equal to the task, putting on 97 before they were both dismissed by Shoaib Bashir - with the first ball of the last session also resulting in a wicket.
In a Herculian effort, Bashir bowled 44 overs in the day, collecting three to add to his wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal on the first day, but once more before the close India put together a partnership to frustrate England with an unbroken ninth-wicket partnership of 45 between Kuldeep Yadav (27) and Jasprit Bumrah (19).

India 473-8 (Kuldeep 27, Bumrah 19) Overs 120. Lead: 255 runs

Bumrah is growing in confidence and even in the last over of the day he hooks Wood and it needed smart fielding from Bairstow to save a boundary.

India 472-8 (Kuldeep 27, Bumrah 18) Overs 119. Lead: 254 runs

Bumrah gets a single to bring up the 250-lead for India. Stokes drops a chance from Kuldeep whose sweep bounced against his foot and the England skipper had the ball in his right hand at full stretch but it bounced out. The next ball Kuldeep sweeps firmly for a boundary.

India 467-8 (Kuldeep 23, Bumrah 17) Overs 118. Lead: 249 runs

Bumrah plays a lovely cover drive off Wood's first ball. He will be happy for Wood to keep the ball full to him. Pope could have run Kuldeep out with the last ball of the over which was tipped and run, but he could not pick the ball off the grass.

India 462-8 (Kuldeep 22, Bumrah 13) Overs 117. Lead: 244 runs

A maiden over from Bashir. And now we will get some pace bowling in the shape of Mark Wood.

India 462-8 (Kuldeep 22, Bumrah 13) Overs 116. Lead: 244 runs

Another over, another single. Four overs remaining.

India 461-8 (Kuldeep 22, Bumrah 13) Overs 115. Lead: 243 runs

They look pretty content to see out the rest of the game now.

India 460-8 (Kuldeep 21, Bumrah 13) Overs 114. Lead: 242 runs

Bumrah is quite useful with his late cuts, he scores another single down to narrow third man. Six overs remainin in the day.

India 457-8 (Kuldeep 19, Bumrah 11) Overs 113. Lead: 239 runs

Do England try something different now? The spinners are no longer looking threatening.

India 456-8 (Kuldeep 18, Bumrah 11) Overs 112. Lead: 238 runs

Hartley is steady but does not look like threatening these two at present.

India 455-8 (Kuldeep 17, Bumrah 11) Overs 111. Lead: 237 runs

A delicate late cut from Bumrah denies Bashir a maiden. It probably isn't a crucial partnership, but it's an impressive one between these two.

India 451-8 (Kuldeep 17, Bumrah 7) Overs 110. Lead: 233 runs

A good over from Hartley just concedes the one run. Ten overs still to be bowled so play will go on a little later than scheduled...great news for those of us who were up before 4am!

India 450-8 (Kuldeep 17, Bumrah 6) Overs 109. Lead: 232 runs

A rare sign of Bashir getting frustrated. Conceding six from the over, with Bumrah getting four of them. He dropped very short with his last delivery allowing Bumrah a single to keep strike.

India 444-8 (Kuldeep 15, Bumrah 2) Overs 108. Lead: 226 runs

Kuldeep is looking pretty comfortable. Certainly against Hartley.

India 443-8 (Kuldeep 14, Bumrah 2) Overs 107. Lead: 225 runs

Two more from Bashir's over. England's openers will be forgiven for not wanting the wickets to come until just before end of play.

India 441-8 (Kuldeep 13, Bumrah 1) Overs 106. Lead: 223 runs

Kuldeep sweeps Hartley hard for four. As would be expected the left-hander prefers the left-arm spinner than the right arm off spinner at the other end. Bumrah gets off the mark with a clothed effort that lands short of mid on.

India 435-8 (Kuldeep 8, Bumrah 0) Overs 105. Lead: 217 runs

A fine over, Bashir twice beating the outside edge of Kuldeep and almost grazing the off stump.

India 434-8 (Kuldeep 7, Bumrah 0) Overs 104. Lead: 216 runs

A good tight over from Hartley. Can England's spinners knock over the last couple of wickets in this evening session?

India 433-8 (Kuldeep 6, Bumrah 0) Overs 103. Lead: 215 runs

England had the chance of another wicket but an awful throw at the stumps with Bumrah out his ground sees Kuldeep get a few bonus overthrows.

Wicket! Ashwin b Hartley 0. India 428-8.

Ashwin played for turn and this one stays straight and takes out Ashwin's leg stump.

Wicket! Jadeja lbw b Hartley 15. India 427-7

Jadeja appeals upstairs but it looked out and the ball tracking has the leg stump being hit.

India 427-6 (Jadeja 15, Ashwin 0) Overs 101. Lead: 209 runs

Ashwin joins his spinning partner at the crease. While these two are at the crease India will feel they can get to a lead of 300.

Wicket! Jurel c Duckett b Bashir 15. India 427-6

The wicketkeeper came down the wicket and looked to launch over long on but did not hit the ball cleanly and Duckett caught a few yards inside from the boundary rope.

India 426-5 (Jadeja 14, Jurel 15) Overs 100. Lead: 208 runs

We see a bit of the old Jadeja as he bashes Hartley back over his head but good fielding from Duckett prevents a boundary.

India 420-5 (Jadeja 9, Jurel 14) Overs 99. Lead: 202 runs

Bashir is so refreshing the way he is so realistic about appeals. He strikes Jadeja on the pads but he immediately shakes his head and turns away when Stokes asks if wants a review. The ball was heading down leg and Jadeja got an inside edge - but it wouldn't have put off many bowlers.

India 420-5 (Jadeja 9, Jurel 14) Overs 98. Lead: 202 runs

Jurel cuts hard off the back foot to extend India's lead to 200.

India 414-5 (Jadeja 8, Jurel 9) Overs 97. Lead: 196 runs

Jadeja very patient at present. He has shown an ability to play the conditions in this series.

India 413-5 (Jadeja 8, Jurel 8) Overs 96. Lead: 195 runs

Just one off Hartley's over. These two just looking to see out this spell at present.

India 412-5 (Jadeja 8, Jurel 7) Overs 95. Lead: 194 runs

Two runs off the over from Bashir.

India 410-5 (Jadeja 7, Jurel 6) Overs 94. Lead: 192 runs

England's fielding has been poor in this match. Crawley lets a ball through him for a boundary. He and Hartley have both been sloppy today.

India 406-5 (Jadeja 7, Jurel 2) Overs 93. Lead: 188 runs

Jurel gets off the mark. What a spell from Bashir!

Wicket! Padikkal b Bashir 65. India 403-5

A fantastic wicket for Bashir, beating the set batsman's outside edge and taking the off stump.

India 403-4 (Padikkal 65, Jadeja 6) Overs 92. Lead: 185 runs

Three off the over from Root. A bit of a lull in the game at present but you can see these two pushing again in the last hour of play.

India 400-4 (Padikkal 63, Jadeja 5) Overs 91. Lead: 182 runs

Padikkal's single brings up the 400 for India. They do not look like stopping there either.

India 399-4 (Padikkal 62, Jadeja 5) Overs 90. Lead: 181 runs

Four singles off Root's over. It will be hard for him to keep these two silent.

India 395-4 (Padikkal 60, Jadeja 3) Overs 89. Lead: 177 runs

Just a single off Bashir's over and there will be off spin at both ends with Joe Root coming on to bowl.

India 394-4 (Padikkal 60, Jadeja 2) Overs 88. Lead: 176 runs

Two fours from Padikkal off Hartley. First behind square and the next square cut beautifully to the boudnary.

India 386-4 (Padikkal 52, Jadeja 2) Overs 87. Lead: 168 runs

Padikkal reaches his maiden half-century on debut with a glorious six over long on.

India 379-4 (Padikkal 45, Jadeja 2) Overs 85. Lead: 161 runs

Hartley takes the new ball at the other end, maybe a little surprisingly. The last ball sees a very optimistic appeal for a ball pitching well outside Jadeja's leg stump.

India 377-4 (Padikkal 44, Jadeja 1) Overs 84. Lead: 159 runs

Jadeja gets off the mark with a prod to mid on. Bashir looks full of confidence now. What a start!

Wicket! Sarfaraz c Root b Bashir 56. India 376-4.

First ball after Tea, Sarfaraz on the back foot looks to late cut but only succeeds in edging to Root at slip.

Tea: India 376-3 (Padikkal 44, Sarfaraz 56). Lead: 158 runs

The session started brilliantly for England, with Ben Stokes in storybook fashion taking a wicket with his first ball after surgery to dismiss Rohit Sharma (103) and then James Anderson bowling Shubman Gill (110). This exposed India's young middle order but they were not found wanting at all, putting on an unbroken stand of 97 before Tea.

India 376-3 (Padikkal 44, Sarfaraz 56) Overs 83. Lead: 158 runs

Sarfaraz scores three off the first ball and then Padikkal is content to see out the rest of the over and go for a break.

India 373-3 (Padikkal 44, Sarfaraz 53) Overs 83. Lead: 155 runs

Three singles from Bashir's over. One more over before Tea.

India 370-3 (Padikkal 43, Sarfaraz 51) Overs 82. Lead: 152 runs

Anderson shares the new ball and after a tidy first five deliveries is driven with authority through the covers by Padikkal.

India 366-3 (Padikkal 39, Sarfaraz 51) Overs 81. Lead: 148 runs

Bashir bowls with the new cherry but it gives him no change of fortune, Sarfaraz twice sweeps hard to the square leg boundary and brings up his fifty.

India 357-3 (Padikkal 38, Sarfaraz 43) Overs 80. Lead: 139 runs

Root has his first bowl of the day, just the single off it and now the new ball is available - and they take it.

India 356-3 (Padikkal 37, Sarfaraz 43) Overs 79. Lead: 138 runs

Bashir comes into bowl and Sarfaraz launches at him outside off stump, but gets away with not quite connecting with the ball. Bashir going at nearly five an over in this innings. India clearly have a plan to not let him settle.

India 352-3 (Padikkal 36, Sarfaraz 40) Overs 78. Lead: 134 runs

Sarfaraz continues to torment Wood. First a clip through midwicket and then a wonderful hook over square leg for six.

India 339-3 (Padikkal 35, Sarfaraz 28) Overs 77. Lead: 121 runs

A couple of singles off Hartley's over.

India 337-3 (Padikkal 34, Sarfaraz 27) Overs 76. Lead: 119 runs

Sarfaraz has shifted gear. Wood bowls a decent delivery tailing in towards middle stump and Sarfaraz just hit through the line over the bowler's head, one bounce for four. Then he plays a ramp over slip and Hartley cannot stop it going for four at narrow third man.

India 329-3 (Padikkal 34, Sarfaraz 19) Overs 75. Lead: 111 runs

Hartley drops too short and he is punished by Sarfaraz who pulls over midwicket for four. He was a little more streaky when sweeping in front of square but it still was a yard or so over Crawley 10m in from the boundary. These two have brought up their 50 partnership off 76 balls.

India 318-3 (Padikkal 33, Sarfaraz 9) Overs 74. Lead: 100 runs

Coming around the wicket, Wood bowls a beauty with some reverse swing beating Paddikkal outside the off stump. Two singles bring up the 100 lead.

India 316-3 (Padikkal 32, Sarfaraz 8) Overs 73. Lead: 98 runs

England have managed to slow down the glut of runs from India.

India 315-3 (Padikkal 31, Sarfaraz 8) Overs 72. Lead: 97 runs

Wood replaces Stokes in the attack and bowls a maiden. A good resumption after the mini-break.

India 315-3 (Padikkal 31, Sarfaraz 8) Overs 71. Lead: 97 runs

Hartley replaces Anderson and just concedes a couple of singles. And that brings up the mid-session drinks break.

India 313-3 (Padikkal 30, Sarfaraz 7) Overs 70. Lead: 95 runs

A maiden over from Stokes. They would rather keep bowling at Sarfaraz.

India 313-3 (Padikkal 30, Sarfaraz 7) Overs 69. Lead: 95 runs

Anderson drifts a little wide of off stump and Padikkal plays airily but risk-free through the vacant covers for four. Poor fielding at thirfd man from Hartley gives him another boundary. As Anderson drifts onto his pads from around the wicket he clips him for four. He really is some talent.

India 301-3 (Padikkal 18, Sarfaraz 7) Overs 68. Lead: 83 runs

A single from Sarfaraz to long leg brings up India's 300. He is beaten off the penultimate ball though with a similar delivery which castled his captain.

India 299-3 (Padikkal 17, Sarfaraz 6) Overs 67. Lead: 81 runs

Another wonderful shot through the off side from Padikkal. He really is a joy to watch.

India 295-3 (Padikkal 13, Sarfaraz 6) Overs 66. Lead: 77 runs

It was a difficult chance, but we've seen Stokes catch harder. He grassed a tough caught and bowled chance, though the siren may have provided some comfort as it wouldn't have counted anyway due to a no ball. There followed another edge through the vacant slip area but Sarfaraz deliberately guided that one.

India 290-3 (Padikkal 13, Sarfaraz 2) Overs 65. Lead: 72 runs

Padikkal with a second streaky boundary. This one edged through the vacant second slip area.

India 286-3 (Padikkal 9, Sarfaraz 2) Overs 64. Lead: 68 runs

A cultured drive through the covers from Padikkal sees him notch a second boundary - and one which will fill him with confidence.

India 280-3 (Padikkal 4, Sarfaraz 1) Overs 63. Lead: 62 runs

A tough ask for these two young batsmen now. They have the platform of runs on the board but will face a stern examination now.

Wicket! Gill b Anderson 110: India 279-3

Taking inspiration from his skipper, Anderson gets Gill out in a similar fashion, with the ball moving off the seam and beating the bat before striking the off stump.

India 279-2 (Gill 110, Padikkal 4) Overs 62. Lead: 61 runs

Stokes also gets the edge of Padikkal's bat but it flies through the vacant second or third slip area. His seam position is Jimmy Anderson-like. What a return to his life as a bowler.

Wicket! Rohit b Stokes 103: India 275-2

The England skipper brings himself onto bowl for the first time of the series and the first ball is a beauty beating the outside of Rohit's bat and clipping off stump.

India 275-1 (Rohit 103, Gill 110) Overs 61. Lead: 57 runs

As you were. Two singles, a no ball and then a beautiful on drive coming down the pitch from Gill. From the last ball of the over, he stays in his crease plays a lofted drive over midwicket.

India 264-1 (Rohit 102, Gill 101) Overs 60. Lead: 46 runs

James Anderson will bowl the first over.

Lunch: India 264-1 (Rohit 102, Gill 101)

A perfect morning for India and everything England did not want to happen. These two batsman dominated the England attack, adding 129 runs in the morning session. There was just the one slight chance for England when Rohit flicked a ball from Bashir just past the right hand of Crawley at leg slip.

India 264-1 (Rohit 102, Gill 101) Overs 60. Lead: 46 runs

Two runs off the last over of the morning session. A session in which they have scored 129 with the loss of no wickets, while each batsman has helped themselves to a century.

India 262-1 (Rohit 101, Gill 100) Overs 59. Lead: 44 runs

Gill sweeps sweetly for four to deep backward square and he is also a centurion. He bows to the crowd, who should be doing the same to him. What a morning for India.

India 257-1 (Rohit 100, Gill 96) Overs 58. Lead: 39 runs

Gill with a late cut from a slightly wide delivery from Hartley brings up the 150-partnership. Then Rohit clips the last ball of the over to deep midwicket to reach his hundred.

India 251-1 (Rohit 99, Gill 91) Overs 57. Lead: 33 runs

Bashir bowls a maiden over, frustrating Rohit as he looks to move to three figures. Both batsmen would love to do so before lunch in ten minutes.

India 251-1 (Rohit 99, Gill 91) Overs 56. Lead: 33 runs

The India 250 comes up with a lofted drive over mid on taking Rohit within a couple of a century. He then looks to bring up the ton through the leg side but plays a leading edge through the off side.

India 246-1 (Rohit 94, Gill 91) Overs 55. Lead: 28 runs

Gill miss-hits to just short of short midwicket from a rare half-tracker from Bashir. He then plays a gorgeous back foot drive which Wood stops just short of the boundary. Bashir beats the outside edge witht the last ball of the over - a rare sight this morning.

India 241-1 (Rohit 92, Gill 88) Overs 54. Lead: 23 runs

The Indian batsmen are finding Hartley less easy to get away, but still three singles off the over.

India 238-1 (Rohit 90, Gill 87) Overs 53. Lead: 20 runs

Rohit moves into the 90s and then off the last ball Gill dances down the wicket and lofts the ball high over the deep midwicket boundary.

India 231-1 (Rohit 89, Gill 81) Overs 52. Lead: 13 runs

A maiden from Hartley to back up Bashir. Gill now batting in a cap which is always nice to see. A floppy hat even nicer.

India 231-1 (Rohit 89, Gill 81) Overs 51. Lead: 13 runs

Just the single off Bashir's over.

India 230-1 (Rohit 89, Gill 80) Overs 50. Lead: 12 runs

Rohit sweeps Hartley for four off the penultimate ball of the over.

India 225-1 (Rohit 85, Gill 79) Overs 49. Lead: 7 runs

Gill with a huge hit off Bashir's first ball. Over the sidescreen and into the stands.

India 218-1 (Rohit 85, Gill 72) Overs 48. Scores level

Wood tries a yorker but Gill meets it with a beautifully timed stab through vacant mid on for four. He gets another three through the covers. Wherever Stokes moves the field, these batsmen are able to find the gaps off the England seamers. Hartley misfields at fine leg to gift Rohit a four.

India 206-1 (Rohit 80, Gill 65) Overs 47. Trail by 12 runs

A second straight maiden over from Hartley. A good start to his spell.

India 206-1 (Rohit 80, Gill 65) Overs 46. Trail by 12 runs

Rohit backs off and slaps the ball through the vacant covers area for four. It brings the hundred partnership up off 149 balls.

India 202-1 (Rohit 76, Gill 65) Overs 45. Trail by 16 runs

Hartley comes on to bowl and bowls the first maiden since the opening over of the day.

India 202-1 (Rohit 76, Gill 65) Overs 44. Trail by 16 runs

Gill brings up the two hundred for India with a push through the covers. 67 runs from India in the first hour.

India 199-1 (Rohit 76, Gill 62) Overs 43. Trail by 19 runs

He is not bowling badly Bashir but it is so hard for England to get any pressure.

India 197-1 (Rohit 75, Gill 61) Overs 42. Trail by 21 runs

Wood gets the outside edge of Gill's bat but it goes through the now vacant second slip area for four - it may not quite have carried had the fielder not just been moved. There followed a nasty bouncer from Wood which forced Gill to duck out the way, but undaunted the next ball he stroked off the back foot through the vacant gully area for another boundary.

India 189-1 (Rohit 75, Gill 53) Overs 41. Trail by 29 runs

It is all so easy for India now, as they move closer to the English total.

India 186-1 (Rohit 74, Gill 51) Overs 40. Trail by 32 runs

Gill brings up his half-century, off 64 balls, with a pull to long leg.

India 183-1 (Rohit 73, Gill 49) Overs 39. Trail by 35 runs

A leading edge from the first ball of the over but the field is now much more defensive and it bounces safely. It has been a great start for India.

India 180-1 (Rohit 72, Gill 47) Overs 38. Trail by 38 runs

Wood takes over from Anderson and is cut in similar fashion in front of square by Gill and he next plays a glorious drive through the covers for another boundary.

India 171-1 (Rohit 72, Gill 38) Overs 37. Trail by 47 runs

The last ball of the over almost garners Rohit's wicket. He glances the ball which rockets past the right hand of Crawley at fine leg. It looked like he barely saw the ball.

India 166-1 (Rohit 68, Gill 37) Overs 36. Trail by 52 runs

Five dot balls and then the sixth is slightly wide and Rohit guides it down to the vacant third man boundary.

India 162-1 (Rohit 64, Gill 37) Overs 35. Trail by 56 runs

Just the single off the over.

India 161-1 (Rohit 63, Gill 37) Overs 34. Trail by 57 runs

A remarkable shot by Gill from the second ball, walking down the wickets and hitting straight down the ground for six. Anderson drifts wide then and Gill blasts a cuts through point for four, with the next going to the fine leg boundary via a leg glance - England wisely do not ask DRS to look at a leg before.

India 147-1 (Rohit 63, Gill 27) Overs 33. Trail by 71 runs

Rohit attacks! He hits the first ball beautifully over long on for six and then, next ball, a little more agriculturally with right knee down he slogs over mid off, one bounce for four.

India 137-1 (Rohit 53, Gill 27) Overs 32. Trail by 81 runs

Anderson has the ball at the other end. Gill scores the first run of the morning with a glance to square leg and then almost squeezes a ball under Rohit's bat, with the Indian skipper turning the ball through midwicket.

India 135-1 (Rohit 52, Gill 26) Overs 31. Trail by 83 runs

A good first over from Bashir. Right on target just outside off stump and on a good length.

India 135-1 (Rohit 52, Gill 26) Overs 30. Trail by 83 runs

Shoaib Bashir will bowl the first over of the morning.
