Root's century sets India a stiff target in second ODI

LONDON, July 14 (Reuters) - Joe Root's century led England to a challenging total of 322 against India in the second one-day international on Saturday as the hosts looked to level a three-match series.

Electing to bat first after winning the toss, England made a quick start with Jason Roy (40) and Jonathan Bairstow (38) sharing an opening stand of 69 in fewer than 11 overs.
Of the two openers, Bairstow looked relatively more in control in the opening stages of the game, pushing England to rack up a run rate of seven per over.
Unfortunately for England, the introduction of Kuldeep Yadav saw the departure of both openers in quick succession playing the same sweep stroke against the slow left-arm Chinaman bowler.
Root (113) and Eoin Morgan (53) then joined forces to steady the ship and run up a century partnership for the third wicket but the Indian slow bowlers kept chipping away at the middle order with Yadav leading the charge with three wickets.
Some big hitting by David Willey, who scored an unbeaten quickfire 50 off 31 balls in the final overs, pushed England past the 300 mark.
The two sides play the third and final one-day match at Headingley on Tuesday before a five-test series commences on Aug. 1. India won the first game by seven wickets. (Reporting by Saikat Chatterjee; Editing by Clare Fallon)
