The first rest day of the Tour de Ski will taste especially sweet for Switzerland's Dario Cologna after his second win in as many days saw him take possession of the overall leaders bib.
The Swiss cross-country skier thrilled the home crowd again in Lenzerheide on New Year's Day, skiing away from previous leader Sergey Ustiugov on the second lap of four to set up the win.
Russian Ustiugov had held a 1.6 second advantage ahead of the stage but saw that wiped out as Cologna took the win by 17.6 seconds before picking up bonus seconds at the finish line to build a 22.6 second Tour lead.
Alexander Bolshunov hung on for third place on Monday – the same position in which he started – despite a brave attempt by the chasing group.
Cologna said: "I was little bit surprised. It was not planned to ski away in the second lap.
"When Sergey got tired I just went. The crowd was amazing and it helped me a lot in the last lap when I got tired."
The Tour now moves on from Lenzerheide to Oberstdorf, Germany for the fourth and fifth stages from January 3-4.
