Kreuger crossed in a time of 1:16.20 with his compatriots Martin Sundby and H.C. Hollund following behind to complete the podium sweep eight seconds later.
Finland's Livo Niskanen chose to provide a leading charge from the 10 minute mark but he fell away and was overtaken on the half hour stage of the race by Norway's Sundby.

The Norwegians decided to take turns at the front of the pack with Kreuger making his way up the ranks from the back of the pack to breaking away in the last three kilometres, a move that was decisive in his gold medal win.

Britain's Andrew Musgrave was in the mix for a medal, holding a place as high as second in the final five kilometre stretch, but he left himself too much work to do as the Norwegians pushed for the line and he finished in a respectable seventh.
