Sweden were favourites going into the Gold Medal Game as the world number one team and the current world silver medallists, and they took the lead after the first two ends.
They had their advantage cut to one point by the Americans at the halfway stage with the score at 4-3.
Sweden looked hopeful at that stage, having beaten the world ranked number 21 team 10-4 earlier in the round robin stage.
However, USA overtook the Swedes with one simple, yet amazing double takeout in the eighth end proved decisive as Skip John Schuster cleared two Swedish stones with five American yellow stones safely in the house.
After a commanding ninth end, Sweden cut the deficit to 10-7 and vowed to fight on in the final end, but they ran out of stones to try and steal the victory, leaving them no choice but to shake hands in a sporting act of concession.
Victory for Schuster's team means USA have won nine gold medals at the 2018 Winter Olympics and lie fourth in the medal table behind Canada.
