Skip Eve Muirhead's team, who won the previous Olympic bronze by beating Switzerland in Sochi four years ago, will now play Japan In Saturday's medal playoff at 11:05 GMT.
They were beaten by a close 6-4 margin in the semi-finals against Canada at the last Olympics but it was a different story in PyeongChang as Sweden, who beat Muirhead's team for world bronze in 2017, took total control.
Great Britain trailed the Swedes 2-0 after the opening two ends but a brilliant take out by Muirhead with the final stone in the fifth end levelled the scores at 3-3 with two yellow GB stones in the house.
The tables quickly turned in the following end however, as a smart technical shot from Sweden's skip Anna Hasselborg with her final stone moved Sweden back in front by two stones. They did not look back and, after a crucial mistake on the final stone in the seventh end, wrapped up the win in the ninth.
"We're very disappointed, we came up against a very strong Swedish team there and unfortunately we just couldn't get the win," Muirhead told Eurosport.
"We know we've still got a medal to play for, so we're going to come out a lot stronger tomorrow to play for that bronze."
