Brit Watch: Women’s curling team edge China with tense extra-end victory
Team GB’s women curlers bounced back from defeat against the United States to beat China 8-7 after the tense encounter went to an extra end.
Having fell 7-4 to USA earlier on Thursday, the team - led by Eve Muirhead – conceded three stones on the fourth end to trail 4-2.
GB rallied to lead 7-6 after nine, but China ensured it went to an extra end after scoring one stone in the 10th.
Crucially, GB had the hammer going into the decider, and after Anna Sloan impressively cleared the path, Muirhead sent down the winning stone to secure their second round-robin win.
Earlier in the day, Team GB went 3-2 ahead against USA after four ends before finding themselves all-square at 4-4 with two ends to go.
Nina Roth’s US side ultimately prevailed, claiming three more points to win the round-robin clash 7-4.
Meanwhile, the GB men took to the sheets at the Gangneung Curling Centre in between the women’s matches, and they enjoyed a narrow 6-5 win over Japan.
Kyle Smith and his team never trailed the encounter, and though it was 5-5 heading into the final end, GB picked up one final stone to claim their second win from three matches.
