Scotland leave it late to keep hopes alive in Canada

Last-gasp wins over China and hosts Canada leave them just one win and a place outside of the top six heading into the final day of round robin competition.

They notched four points in the tenth to beat China 9-6 before toppling Canada 8-6 with three at the death, but skip Bruce Mouat was keeping his cool amidst the chaos.

"That was a good win and we played really well," he said.

"It's backs against the wall and we had to come out fighting, and we did.

"When we had hammer, we were looking good for twos most of the time, so, in the tenth, we just said we should do just the same as we had done.

"Now we probably have to win the next two to qualify but at least it's still in our own hands."

Wins for the United States over Japan and for Italy over the Netherlands, however, stunted Scotland's progress, setting up a grandstand finale to the round robin, with five teams still in contention for four spots, Sweden and Japan already having confirmed their qualification.

PyeongChang gold medallists the United States were in rare form as they forced Japan to concede after opening up a 10-4 lead by the eighth, leaving them sixth in standings with a record of 7-3 – identical to that of Italy and Canada, with Scotland just behind on 6-4.

Elsewhere, South Korea picked up their first win of the championships, beating Norway 8-5 for a well-deserved consolation triumph.
