The last-16 match went to an extra end after American Hunter Clawson scored two for his team in the eighth end.

But, after leading for most of the game, the Swedes used the hammer effectively to score a single point and seal a place in tonight's quarter-final, where they face Scotland.

"I think USA played a little more defensive than the last time we played them so the score wasn't as high as the last time," said Wranå.

"But they played very well so we had a super tight game and luckily we came out on top.

"We gave away an easy two in the fourth but got a two back straight away which was good.

"Now we'll go away, relax look at the game then put it behind us."

Earlier in the day, Canada had a similarly close encounter with Poland, stalling somewhat after opening the match with a two-point score.

The Canadians could only manage a single point in the fifth end and one more in the sixth, but it was just enough to secure a 4-3 victory and set up a date with Russia in the last eight.

Norway and England's match-up was a slow-burning affair with the teams trading single points throughout, but Norway's three points in the fourth end was enough to hold on for a 6-5 win.

The Norwegians face Turkey in the quarter-final, with Estonia and the Czech Republic making up the last game of the evening session in Champéry, Switzerland.

Estonia knocked out Korea 7-4, while the Czech Republic took control from the outset with three points in the first end in their 6-4 defeat of China.
