Fabio Felline abandoned the Amstel Gold Race after breaking his nose in a freak accident in the neutral zone.

The Italian flew spectacularly over his handlebars before the Spring Classic officially started.

In footage shot by CyclingHubTV, Felline appeared to be adjusting his front wheel when it jammed stopped, catapulting the rider into the air.

His Trek-Segafredo team confirmed he sustained a broken nose and facial injuries, and was undergoing surgery.

They added that he was expected to leave hospital on Sunday.
