Cycling news - Fernando Gaviria makes UAE switch after leaving Quick-Step
Colombian sprinter Fernando Gaviria has signed for UAE Team Emirates after leaving Quick-Step Floors.
Gaviria, who has two Tour de France stages to his name at the age of 24, left his contract with Quick-Step a year early with a financial agreement proving impossible to reach.
His move to the UAE team will see Gaviria earn a big wage increase and, he hopes, allow him to target some big victories.
“I change team after having always raced in the same group, which has given me the possibility to make the next jump to the highest level,” Gaviria said.
" With the new jersey, I’m not going to hide my desires and I want the biggest wins. I’m happy to be able to race with my countrymen Henao, Munoz and Molano. Thanks to the UAE Team Emirates for the faith it put in me."
Gaviria won nine stages across 2018 – with fellow sprinter Elia Viviani proving the star performer for Quick-Step with a total of 18 wins.
