Cycling news - Geraint Thomas hints at attempt to retain Tour title over riding in Giro

Geraint Thomas has dropped a big hint that he would prefer an attempt on a second Tour de France title rather than compete in the Giro d’Italia.
The Welshman, who clinched his maiden Tour title earlier this year, beating team-mate Chris Froome to the title, is set to head to Team Sky’s first winter training camp soon, when the decisions will be made over team leaders and who will compete in which race.
Froome won this year’s Giro but wants to clinch a fifth Tour title to equal the record of Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain.
"I definitely feel there's unfinished business there [at the Giro d'Italia] but next year might be the wrong time," Thomas, who was named Welsh Sports Personality of the Year, told the BBC.
Being there [at the Tour] with number one on my back, it would be a shame to know I wouldn't be at my best, so I'm definitely leaning more towards that.
"But I just need to sit down with Tim [Kerrison - Team Sky coach] over the next few weeks and nail down a plan."
If Thomas does compete in the Tour, it would mean Sky may have to make a decision over who is team leader, with Froome not at his best this year after being affected by his performance in the Giro.
However, Thomas insists that might not have to be the case.
"I'm not sure but if we both wanted to go to the Tour 100%, as long as we both ride like we did this year, we can both do really well," he added.
"As long as we don't race against each other, we both have our ambitions and that works well in training because we both push each other.
"Obviously Froomey wants to go back to the Tour and win his fifth, which would be a record.”
