Egan Bernal remains in intensive care after 'two successful surgeries' following training crash in Colombia

"Egan suffered a fractured vertebrae, a fractured right femur, a fractured right patella, chest trauma, a punctured lung and several fractured ribs in the crash," said Ineos Grenadiers in a statement after two-time Grand Tour winner Egan Bernal crashed during a training session in Colombia. He remains in hospital.

Egan Bernal remains in intensive care after "two successful surgeries" following a crash while training in his native Colombia.
The reigning Giro d’Italia champion was hospitalised after colliding with a parked bus while training with team-mates in Gachancipa, Cundinamarca according to local reports.
Bernal crashed at high speed and suffered multiple injuries in the incident.
A statement from his team, Ineos Grenadiers, on Tuesday afternoon said: "Egan remains in a stable condition after two successful surgeries.
“Egan suffered a fractured vertebrae, a fractured right femur, a fractured right patella [kneecap], chest trauma, a punctured lung and several fractured ribs in the crash.
"Doctors were able to medically pin his right leg and stabilise the vertebrae. He is now in intensive care where other potential injuries are being managed, as well as the body's response to the trauma."
Bernal was training at altitude with Richard Carapaz, Omar Fraile, Carlos Rodriguez, Daniel Martinez and Brandon Rivera.
He was due to start his 2022 season at the Tour de La Provence on February 10 before taking part in the UAE Tour later that month.
Bernal was the youngest Tour de France winner for more than a century when winning in 2019, and added a second Grand Tour title at the Giro d’Italia last year.
His former Ineos team-mate Chris Froome said his "thoughts are with Egan and his family".
Fellow Colombian Rigoberto Uran said Bernal is in "a race that you're going to win", while Nairo Quintana said he was "conscious of what this type of situation entails but I also know that it's always possible to pick yourself up and carry on with greater strength".
Remco Evenepoel and Peter Sagan were among the other professional riders to send Bernal their support.
"I wish you all the strength and motivation for a speedy recovery, you will come back stronger Champ," wrote Evenepoel on Twitter.
Sagan said: "I'm sending Egan Bernal my warmest wishes for a speedy recovery. Egan, I look forward to seeing you bounce back stronger than ever and sharing the road with you wherever we race!"
