Britain’s Ethan Hayter took a brilliant gold in the omnium at the European Championships in Glasgow, climbing from fifth to first in the event-concluding points race.
The 19-year-old flew into the overall lead after picking up a lap with four other riders during a thrilling finale, before easily holding off Olympic champion Elia Viviani to triumph on 133 points.
Hayter finished second in the scratch race, ninth in the 10km tempo and fifth in the elimination race to set up his title triumph. However, he was eight points adrift of leader Benjamin Thomas going into the final event.
Italy’s Viviani and Denmark’s Casper Von Folsach won silver and bronze respectively.
Earlier, Hayter's compatriot Katie Archibald had to settle for silver in the 3000m individual pursuit final after being outclassed by Germany’s Lisa Brennauer.
Archibald, part of GB’s victorious quartet in the team pursuit on Friday, briefly led through the opening lap but her rival soon crept in front.
Brennauer kept increasing her advantage, eventually coming home in 3:26.870 – nearly three seconds clear of Archibald (3:29.577).
Archibald’s team pursuit team-mate Elinor Barker failed to get back onto the podium after finishing in 12th in the points race.
