Dani Navarro is out of the Giro d’Italia after suffering a broken collarbone, three broken ribs and a lung contusion in a huge crash during Stage 4.
The pile-up occurred six kilometres from the finish and the team announced he had withdrawn just a few hours later, having being taken to the hospital of Tor Vergata in Rome.
The Spaniard, 35, is said to be ‘stable’ and his team, Team KATUSHA ALPECIN, released a statement, which read: "Dani Navarro broke his right collarbone as well as three ribs.
"The ribs perforated the lungs and he suffers a lung contusion with a hemothorax with hemoptysis and a pneumothorax at the top and the back of the lung.”
"For the moment the rider is stable and he will be monitored carefully in intensive care in the Policlinico Tor Vergata.”
The crash caused many of the General Classification favourites to fall down the standings, including Tom Dumoulin who is 4mins 30 off the pace.
