Stage 5 of the Giro d'Italia sees the race travel from Catania to Messina as the race enjoys another outing on the Sicilian shores before heading to the Italian mainland. Could Mark Cavendish add a second win or will the early climb see him distanced or expend too much energy before the finish? Spain's Juanpe Lopez will start the day in pink in a day that should be more about the maglia ciclamino.

The 174km schlep is billed as 'flat' in the race manual, but a quick glance at the route profile proves that is a loose definition of the word.

A steady ride from Catania to Messina is punctuated by a Cat. 2 whopper up Portella Mandrazzi, with Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek-Segafredo) hoping for a serene first day in pink after wrestling the leader's jersey of Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) on Mount Etna.
