Pinot was part of the leading group with just over a kilometre to go, with the Frenchman's team FDJ joining Astana in breaking up the rest of the race on the final ascent.
However, Pinot's team-mate David Gaudu accidentally collided with Astana's Miguel Angel Lopez, knocking the Colombian off his bike.

As Pinot took charge of the race, distancing himself from world champion Alejandro Valverde, Lopez remounted and tried to close the gap.
But although Lopez was able to catch Valverde, he could not reach Pinot as the Frenchman won by 10 seconds.
