Olympics Rio 2016: Great Britain get second time trial entry, Geraint Thomas benefits from injuries

Geraint Thomas has been handed a late entry into the Olympic time trial due to the reduced field.
Great Britain were initially awarded just the one berth in the race, but a string of drop-outs due to injury has opened up space in the field for a second British rider.
Thomas, who finished ahead of Froome in Sunday’s road race despite a nasty crash, will look to compete for the medals on the challenging 55km course that includes the climbs from Sunday’s race.
Richie Porte of Australia and Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali are two notable riders forced to withdraw following crashes on the tricky descending sections of the mountains outside Rio.
Wet and windy weather conditions are set to make Wednesday’s event even more demanding for the riders.
A series of crashes in both the men’s and women’s road races highlight the miniscule margin for error on a challenging and technical course.
