EXPERT PREDICTIONS
Bernard Hinault, Five-time Tour victor
Podium 1. Landis 2. Sastre 3. Klöden
"Landis should logically win this time trial and Sastre should come in behind him, thanks to the beautiful physical condition that he is in currently. Landis will be three or four minutes in front. He discovered himself in this Tour. The conservative rider of the Pyrenees, was pushed into the final trenches in the Alps. Since we have discovered a champion."

Gilbert Duclos-Lassalle, Double Paris-Roubaix winner
Podium: 1. Landis 2. Sastre 3. Pereiro
"Landis is the best, but Sastre should still pursue him. As for Pereiro, he has only one chance to contend: to be in his rhythm at the 10-km mark. If not, he will have lost. Klöden, on the other hand, is too far off pace to flirt with a podium."
Laurent Jalabert, Former points and mountain winner at Tour
Podium: 1. Landis 2. Sastre 3. Pereiro
"Landis can take one minute out of Sastre and two from Pereiro. The only thing which worries me is the rally which he carried out in Morzine. Will he have recovered?"
Raymond Poulidor, Three-time second-place finisher at Tour de France
Podium: 1. Landis 2. Pereiro 3. Sastre
"Landis should normally be the strongest. He will be in front. I will put Pereiro in front of Sastre. He has a yellow jersey to defend and he profited from the climb at Joux-Plane: he did not have team-mates to help him, but two teams rolled for him, CSC and T-Mobile. That could play a part, just like the fact that he starts last and has timing reference marks."
Eddy Seigneur, Four-time French national TT champion
Podium: 1. Landis 2. Pereiro 3. Sastre
"Landis will get clear naturally. He has physical qualities above the rest. Pereiro will have the motivation to defend the yellow jersey and Sastre to remain on the podium. Klöden and Evans are two and three minutes off pace, and that's too much. But I hope to be mistaken, especially for T-Mobile."
Richard Virenque, Seven-time mountain winner at Tour
Podium: 1. Landis 2. Pereiro 3. Sastre
"Landis did what was necessary at Morzine. He will be in front. An American will be succeeded by another one. But that is the only thing in common between Landis and Armstrong. They are not comparable, even if we only look at the level of strength of their teams. Landis was virtually alone."

Jose-Miguel Echavarri, Oscar Pereiro's team manager (Caisse D'Epargne)
Podium: 1. Landis 2. Pereiro 3. Sastre
"I always keep hope for Oscar (Pereiro). In leaving the last, he will have reference marks. And so much has already happened in this Tour... But Landis remains the favourite. Oscar is good. We can put him at 2nd place."
Christian Prudhomme, Tour de France director
Podium: 1. Landis 2. Sastre 3. Pereiro
"I forecast Floyd Landis because he is strongest and he has more reference marks in this particular time trial. He should finish a good minute and 30 seconds in front. But since the beginning of the 2006 Tour, logic has not been logical. Therefore, the result might not be the one foreseen... "
STAT OF THE DAY - Sastre's, Landis', and Pereiro's previous ITTs
Why is everybody picking Landis? Quite simply, because he is the strongest time trialer of the final contenders for the yellow jersey. In fact, the discipline is one of his strongest, and he proved as much with his legendary solo break-away victory to Morzine, riding the valleys as if he were on the time trial of his life. Carlos Sastre is used to being a lieutenant for Ivan Basso, and doesn't have the experience as his team's solo leader in a Tour de France. Oscar Pereiro is without a doubt more efficient on shorter distances ITTs, the one he won at the Tour de Romandie prologue in 2005. But then again, he has never contested an ITT with a leader jersey on his shoulders, especially not the Tour's maillot jaune.

DUFFIELD DIARY: Out of time
"We can try and talk about something else, but if you say time trial I'm obliged to evoke 1989 when Greg Lemond wins the Tour de France by eight seconds with that final day individual time trial on the Champs-Elysees. I remember it was the first year Eurosport existed and my producer told me ahead of the final weekend of the race to keep building it up and I was a bit annoyed and I said no way is Fignon going to lose it, he's from Paris racing at home, he's strong, no way. Then when we were live, I saw Fignon early in the TT turn to the photographer or the cameraman and give a wink and I thought, huh, he's not so dedicated today. Then we saw Lemond going on all cylinders with that helmet and those revolutionary handlebars that no one had ever seen before. We had a stopwatch in the studio and when we realized that he'd won, I was so flabbergasted that I leaned back and my chair broke and I fell flat on my back. I had to scramble to get up and viewers must have wondered why there was a big, long pause as it all sunk in."

CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE OF THE DAY - Kir
A sweet and tasty aperitif made from a mix of crème de cassis (blackcurrant liquor) and white wine, a good Sancerre for example. Named after the former mayor of Dijon, Félix Kir (1876 - 1968), who promoted the drink from the crème de cassis producing Burgundy region to international visitors after the second World War. For anyone celebrating a Tour de France yellow jersey after today's penultimate and decisive stage, try a Kir Royale: crème de cassis and champagne. Cheers.
