The Lotto Soudal time trial specialist was the seventh man to shoot for Wiggins’ mark of 54.526km from 2015, with the Belgian finally surpassing the 2012 Tour de France champion inside the final minute.
The scene of the triumph, the Aguascalientes Bicentenary Velodrome, is 1,800m above sea level – with the reduced air pressure making it one of the fastest in the world. Wiggins set his mark at sea level in London.
"I’m super happy and if I think of the list that I’m on now, I’m among the greatest cyclists in history," Campenaerts said.
"I’ve focused on this for a long time so I’m really happy I could break the record and I’m also really happy that I could break the magic 55km."
Campenaerts spent the winter and first part of 2019 preparing, including a two-month stint at altitude in Namibia.
