Miguel Angel Lopez withstands Adam Yates attack to secure Volta a Catalunya title

Miguel Angel Lopez dug deep to secure overall victory in the Volta a Catalunya ahead of Briton Adam Yates.
Davide Formolo won the seventh and final stage on Sunday, while Yates’ late attack was not enough to close the gap on Lopez, who won the general classification by 14 seconds.
Lopez was joined on the podium by fellow Colombian Egan Bernal of Team Sky.
Following a bruising crash in stage two, and a lift for teammate Bernal in stage five, Chris Froome ended more than an hour behind in 125th.
Meanwhile, Yates’ twin brother Simon, finished 12th overall.
But for Lopez, victory gives the Astana rider a huge boost ahead of the Giro d’Italia in May, with the 25-year-old having finished third in last year’s Grand Tour event behind Froome and Tom Dumoulin.
