Rio 2016 Olympics: Jack Laugher and Chris Mears dive for gold as Britain celebrates day of success

The British duo pulled off a truly stunning 4 1/2 somersault in their final dive of the competition to score over 91 points and take first place with only the legendary Chinese duo of Qin Kai and Cao Yuan come.

But the Chinese pair faltered badly on their final attempt - with double Olympic champion and five-times world champion Qin, almost unbelievably, ending up with only a bronze – leaving Laugher and Mears to embrace in tears after becoming the nation's heroes on a magnificent day for Britain at The Games.

Sam Dorman and Mike Hixon of the USA finished in the silver medal position, a wonderful result for a duo who were given no chance before the event.

But the day belonged to Laugher and Mears, Britain's first-ever Olympic diving champions - and in particular Mears, who almost died as a teenager back in 2009 after going into a coma with a spleen illness.

He was given only a five per cent chance of survival, but pulled through to build a great career - and now he has an Olympic gold medal to show for his efforts.
