Defending 10m individual platform champion Tom Daley has announced that he has withdrawn from the event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games with a hip injury.
Daley, 23, has won the event at the past two games but will not be able to compete as he continues to struggle with “recurring injury”.
Daley will however continue as planned to compete in the 10m synchronised event as the dives are less dangerous.
"I am truly devastated not to be competing in the individual event. I have been training so hard for the Commonwealth Games, so this is a real disappointment for me.” Daley said in a statement.
"The hardest thing for any athlete is competing with an injury, especially when it means they can't compete in what they have been working towards. I continue training for the 10m synchronised diving event alongside Dan."
Team England added "The technical dives in the individual event put enormous physical strain on Tom's body.
"Due to prior illness and with his hips being the determining factor, some of the dives Tom was due to demonstrate in the individual event would be too dangerous and impactful on his body."
Daley has had to restrict his participation in this season’s World Series to just 3m events has he continues to battle on-going injury problems.
However he did win the 10m gold at the FINA World Championships last August.
