After Burghley and Kentucky, is Badminton next for Townend?

Top British rider Oliver Townend’s victory at this past weekend’s CCI4* Kentucky Three-Day Event – following his win at last September’s Burghley Horse Trials – has put him within striking distance of Eventing’s £255,000 Grand Slam prize.
The bonus, the richest in the sport, is for consecutive victories at Burghley, Kentucky and Badminton, and only two riders have pulled off the feat before: Germany’s Michael Jung and Great Britain’s Pippa Funnell. This year, Jung and fischerRocana FST were second in the Bluegrass State after winning in 2017. The United States’ Marilyn Little and her horse RF Scandalous were third. The full results are here. A video recap of the competition is here.
In Kentucky, Townend and his Irish-bred horse Cooley Master Class came out on top after Show Jumping, which determined the podium places after the Dressage and Cross-Country phases. At Badminton, the rider is expected to partner with another lead mount, Ballaghmor Class.
