Florian Bernardi bounced back from a difficult Saturday morning loop of Rally di Roma Capitale, surging to second place in the FIA European Rally Championship’s ERC3 category after a shock absorber issue was remedied.
Hoping to follow up his Rally Islas Canarias ERC3 class victory with more success in Rome, Bernardi’s quest for a podium was hampered by a damper issue on Leg One’s Saturday morning loop.
Despite running through stage four with only three working shock absorbers, Bernardi remained in the top five, conceding only 8.9s to his class rivals aboard his Renault Clio R3T.
Thanks to a rapid full rear axle change at midday service by his Fred Anne Compétition support team, along with repaired shock absorbers by Rtec, Bernardi incurred only 30 seconds of time penalties for late check-out from service.
Bernardi rewarded his mechanics’ efforts by going fastest in two of Saturday afternoon’s three full-length stages, climbing from fourth to second in ERC3, 1.4s ahead of ERC Junior Under 27 competitor Tom Kristensson.
