Aleks Zawada’s bid to win the FIA ERC Junior Under 27 Championship has been dealt a big blow after he stopped three kilometres into Saturday’s opening stage.
Zawada started Rally di Roma Capitale with a three-point advantage over Chris Ingram. However, the Pole will go no further on leg one after mechanical issues struck his Opel ADAM R2.

“It’s drivetrain-related but I’m not sure if it’s engine or gearbox,” said Zawada. “Having done all the work and preparation the chance of the championship has been ripped out of my fingertips so I’m pretty distraught. But this is the sport and it’s not the first time or last time it will happen like this.”

After SS2, Ingram leads ACCR Czech Team driver Filip Mareš by 2.7s with Ingram’s factory Opel team-mate Jari Huttunen third, 5.4s behind.
