Hadik leads future ERC rally after night-time city stage

András Hadik leads the Nyíregyháza Rally following tonight’s superspecial, overcoming foggy and damp conditions to top the times in northeast Hungary.
A few hours after Rally Hungary – which the Nyíregyháza Rally is due to become next year following its inclusion on the provisional FIA European Rally Championship calendar for 2019 – Hadik shrugged off the limited visibility and slippery asphalt to set the pace ahead of double ERC2 champion Tibor Érdi Jr.
“It was an interesting stage,” said Hungarian Hadik, whose Ford Fiesta R5 is being co-driven by Attila Deák. “We drove in big fog, though I tried to push as much as I could. I needed big eyes to see everything. I tried to go safely and fast and I think I could manage to do it. Due to the fog and the slippery road it was very easy to make a mistake, thanks God, we did not make any.”
While Hadik avoided making mistakes, top seed Frigyes Turán, currently second in the Hungarian championship standings, suffered a spin and is 17.4s behind Hadik at the overnight halt.
Érdi Jr, meanwhile, was a mere 2.0s down on Hadik on his first appearance in the Hungarian championship in nine years. “Before the start I forgot to switch on the lights, so I was looking for the button while I was driving,” he said. “Despite this small issue everything went well. I knew that the race was not decided by this stage. We will try to speed up.”
The Nyíregyháza Rally continues tomorrow (Saturday) with eight all-asphalt stages.
