MOL Racing Team will contest the FIA European Rally Championship for a second consecutive season, only this time with the all-new Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 driven by Norbert Herczig and Ramón Ferencz.
Having secured two podiums in their maiden ERC season in 2018 – their first as a partnership – Herczig and Ferencz are now planning a seven-event European campaign in a Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 from the Baumschlager Rallye & Racing (BRR) stable.

“Nine years ago we were among the first who chose the ŠKODA Fabia S2000 and after that the ŠKODA Fabia R5,” said Herczig, 43. “So we have spent nine wonderful years together [with ŠKODA], winning the Hungarian championship three times and twice standing on the ERC podium.

“It was hard to decide to change [from ŠKODA] but I trust [in that] we will be able to reach similar or even better results with the Volkswagen Polo GTI R5.”

Herczig has a total of four Hungarian titles to his name, the first coming in 2009 at the wheel of a Subaru Impreza WRC. Switching to ŠKODA power in 2010, Herczig claimed a trio of Hungarian titles between 2015-2017 before stepping up from national to international level in the 2018 ERC. After scoring points on his championship debut on the Azores Airlines Rallye last March, Herczig finished on the podium in Greece and Cyprus in June and placed sixth in the final ERC standings.

“It’s really good news to welcome Norbi, Ramón and the MOL Racing Team back to the ERC for a second season, their first with new Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 of course,” said ERC Co-ordinator Jean-Baptiste Ley. “We were really impressed with the progress they made in 2018, despite having no previous knowledge of any of the six events they contested. Their podiums were the result of strong performances and a great team effort and we have no doubt they will be among the frontrunners again in 2019 when we also welcome Rally Hungary to the schedule.”

The 2019 ERC calendar features four events on gravel and four on asphalt, including the season-closing Rally Hungary from 8-10 November in the city of Nyíregyháza. It will mean a home event for Herczig, Ferencz and the entire MOL Racing Team.

Herczig’s alliance with MOL Hungary began in 2016. What was initially a deal for the supply of MOL Racing Fuel RST (Rally Standard), developed into a fully-fledged partnership when MOL became his title sponsor during the 2017 Hungarian Rally Championship.
