Petros Panteli will start Leg Two of the Cyprus Rally leading the FIA European Rally Championship’s ERC2 category, after previous leader Panikos Polykarpou was given a 20 second time penalty.
Polykarpou had won four stages in ERC2 to Panteli’s two on Saturday, establishing a 19.8s lead on his home event. That lead was then wiped out when Polykarpou checked out of final service on Saturday evening two minutes late, incurring a 20 second penalty.
Panteli now restarts on Sunday as ERC category leader, albeit with an extremely slim 0.2s advantage over his fellow Cypriot.
Q8 Oils Rally Team pilot Panteli faces a tough challenge to keep Polykarpou at bay on Sunday, considering the latter’s track record on the Cyprus Rally. Polykarpou finished third overall in 2017, driving a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX which he is using once again this year.
