The arrival of FIM EWC newcomer SET Racing marks Scandinavia’s entry into Endurance. The Swedish team made their debut at the Bol d’Or, where their chances of a Top 10 spot went up in smoke a few hours from the finish.
SET Racing are newcomers to the FIM EWC ranks this season, but they have already lined up a few core assets. A Yamaha-mounted entry in the Formula EWC class, the Swedish team are preparing their bike and technical structure with help from seasoned endurance specialists YART Yamaha.
The proven experience of their three riders is another key factor. Rider and team manager Jari Tuovinen, the 2017 Swedish Superbike champion, has also raced in the German and Spanish championships. He created SET (Sweden Endurance Team) with Christoffer Bergman, another Swedish rider who has made his mark in FIM Supersport, as well as in Endurance with Moto Ain last year. Finnish racer Ville Valtonen rounds off the SET Racing rider trio. Valtonen, who won the 2017 Baltic Superbike championship, is also a three-time Finnish championship runner-up.
Debut outing: The 2018 Bol d’OrThe team’s objective was to finish in the Top 10. They nearly achieved that goal in their very first FIM EWC race – the Bol d’Or last September. Having started from 30th on the grid, SET Racing ran a superb race in the early stages and were in 10th place by the end of the night on the Castellet circuit. A fuel pump issue slowed them down, after which a late-morning engine failure forced them to withdraw. But SET Racing notched up their first point in the FIM EWC by dint of being in 10th place 16 hours into the race.
Next race: The 24 Heures Motos this coming April.
