The 24 Heures Motos pecking order began to take shape during free practice for the 41st edition of the race at Le Mans this morning. Tecmas BMW revealed its ambitions, with Julien Da Costa posting the fastest time ahead of six factory machines.
Julien Da Costa completed a 1’37.015 lap of the Bugatti circuit, placing Tecmas BMW in top spot after the first official test session of the 2nd round of the 2017-2018 FIM EWC. His performance made the ambitions of the French BMW (co-ridden by Camille Hédelin and David Perret) totally clear. Tecmas proved quicker than Team SRC Kawasaki, F.C.C. TSR Honda France, YART Yamaha, Suzuki Endurance Racing Team, Team NRT48-BMW Motorrad and GMT94 Yamaha, who all finished in a close-knit group within 1’37.
Yamaha Viltaïs Experiences was the fastest Superstock team, placing 8th thanks to a 1’37.823 lap by the squad’s new Belgian rider Vincent Lonbois. The Superstock-category Yamaha finished ahead of Honda Endurance Racing, which clocked 1’38.355.
The free practice session took place under sunny skies and stoked the fervor of the 60 competing teams, with a number of minor crashes throughout the initial session of tests. Maco Racing Team’s appeared to be the most serious one, with Grégory Junod obviously suffering back pain as he picked himself up.
The teams will return to the track later this afternoon, at 3.10pm CEST, for the first qualifying.
