Alan Pardew accepts criticism from West Brom fans

West Brom boss Alan Pardew has stressed he and his players have to accept the criticism coming their way and simply keep looking forward in their battle for Premier League survival.

During the 2-1 home loss to Huddersfield on Saturday, there were cries from Baggies fans of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” directed at Pardew and “you’re not fit to wear the shirt” at his team.

Boos rang around The Hawthorns at the final whistle, as had been the case in the 69th minute when Gareth Barry was substituted for Jake Livermore – two of the four Albion players who broke a curfew and allegedly stole a taxi while on a club training trip in Barcelona last week.

What was their fourth successive league defeat left rock-bottom West Brom still seven points adrift of safety, with 10 games left to play. The next of those is Saturday’s trip to Watford.

Pardew said with regard to what had been heard from the fans on Saturday: “We have to accept that and move on, and that is what we will do.

“We just have to go to the next week and hopefully get a win.”

Strikes from Rajiv van La Parra in the 48th minute and Steve Mounie in the 56th put Huddersfield 2-0 up before Craig Dawson replied with a header in the 64th.

Pardew – who said after the game “I hope so but obviously that decision is not with me” when asked if he expected to hold on to his job – was disappointed with his side’s defending for both of the goals they conceded.

The 56-year-old, under whom West Brom have won only one of 14 league matches following his appointment in November, said: “We kind of trained well this week and usually you think that will be reflected in a performance.

“We started OK – the first moments of the game was probably our best period.

“But Huddersfield put us under a lot of pressure, they made it a bitty game, possession was changing far too often at times, and we lacked composure on the ball for long, long periods.

“They were two poor goals defensively. That is definitely something we need to correct going forward – it is unlike us to ship goals in like we have just recently.

“It was a frustrating afternoon all-round.”

The result made it back-to-back league wins for Huddersfield, who had lost five top-flight games in a row prior to that.

They moved up from 17th to 14th, three points clear of the relegation zone, and boss David Wagner said: “Since day one when we met up for pre-season, we only had one target – to survive in the Premier League.

“This is what it is all about, and we are on the way – not more, not less. We know we need further wins, further points.

“We went over this dip and built up the momentum, which we needed.

“We have the feeling we have this momentum now and we will do everything to keep this momentum ongoing.”
