Defender Alan Hutton has signed a new one-year deal at Aston Villa.
The right-back was out of contract this summer but will stay with the cash-strapped club.
Nottingham Forest had reportedly offered him a two-year deal to move to the City Ground.
Villa have been in turmoil since losing the Sky Bet Championship play-off final to Fulham last month, with growing fears over their financial future as they missed a tax bill and sacked chief executive Keith Wyness – who is now suing for constructive dismissal.
Hutton told the club: “There were times I thought I was playing my last game. After the Fulham defeat it could have gone either way.
“I’ve found it tough, I’ve grown to love the club. I’m still coming to terms with it (the play-off defeat) but we’ve got a new season coming up and we have to look forward now.
“The club should be in the Premier League. The unfinished business is getting back to the Premier League.
“I would have waited for as long as possible but fortunately for me it’s come quickly.
“It’s all I ever really wanted. It’s only just happened but there’s no other place I wanted to be.”
Scotland international Hutton made 33 appearances for Villa last season as they were beaten 1-0 by Fulham at Wembley.
He has played 168 times for Villa, scoring once, since joining from Tottenham, and has spent time on loan at Nottingham Forest, Mallorca and Bolton.
