FULL TIME! Werder Bremen extend their unbeaten run since the resumption of the Bundesliga to three games to move closer to safety, heaping more pressure on Schalke boss David Wagner, who has now lost four games on the bounce.
- Yellow cardOzan KabakFC Schalke 04
Yellow cards! Frustration is boiling over for Schalke as Kabak gets drawn into some afters with Selke. The referee diffuses the situation with a yellow card for both players.
- OffYuya OsakoWerder Bremen
- OnChristian GroßWerder Bremen
Bremen sub: The sub, Osaka, is being subbed. Christian Gross comes on in his place.
There will be FOUR minutes of added time to play. Time is running out for Schalke, who are staring at their fourth straight defeat.
Osaka once again lacks composure as he is released by Eggestein and with just the goalkeeper to beat he tries to square it for Klaassen but Oczipka nips in to clear.
A lovely ball is scooped over the top as Bremen hit the hosts on the counter, but Osaka's first touch gets away from him and a wonderful chance for the visitors to bury the game is gone.
Into the last five minutes and Wagner looks increasingly desperate as he signals his players to go direct. Kenny wins a corner but Bremen stand firm. Is there any way through for Schalke?
- Yellow cardNassim BoujellabFC Schalke 04
Yellow card! Boujellab is booked, the fourth Schalke player to be shown a yellow card this afternoon.
Burgstaller goes to ground on the right side just outside the penalty area - but the throw-in goes Bremen's way, as the visitors buy some breathing space.
- OffJuan MirandaFC Schalke 04
- OnGuido BurgstallerFC Schalke 04
Schalke sub: A change in approach from the hosts now as target-man Guido Burgstaller replaces Miranda for the last 10 minutes. Route-one football here we come.
Panic in the Schalke penalty area as Klaassen's lofted cross isn't dealt with and then Osaka is clattered by Sane. Have they a case for a penalty? The referee isn't interested as the Bremen player slowly gets himself to his feet.
Schalke have still 15 minutes to find a badly-needed equaliser. They are on top at the moment but Bremen, who haven't conceded since the resumption of football, will be difficult to breach.
Wide! Kenny, who only has one goal to his name this season, tries a spectacular first-time volley from distance. A very difficult skill, obviously, and he doesn't quite get the technique right as he shanks it wide.
- OffJosh SargentWerder Bremen
- OnPhilipp BargfredeWerder Bremen
Bremen sub: Philipp Bargfrede is on for Sargent, who had allowed the game to pass him by in the second half.
Caligiuri's lovely knock down finds Raman but he's too hesitant to have a shot and allows the opportunity to slip away.
Bremen, after a first half in which they could do nothing wrong, have turned into a bag of nerves. Klaassen now gifts possession to the hosts as mistakes continue to engulf the game.
Bremen goalkeeper Pavlenka is more assured this time as he rushes through a crowd of bodies and punches a free-kick delivery to safety.
- Yellow cardYuya OsakoWerder Bremen
Yellow card! Osako is now shown a yellow card after an illegal aerial challenge.
Desperate, backs to the wall defending from Bremen as Kutucu sees not one but two shots charged down inside the box, while Kenny also sees an effort blocked.
- OffMichael GregoritschFC Schalke 04
- OnAhmed KutucuFC Schalke 04
Schalke sub: Another change from the hosts sees Gregoritsch make way for Ahmed Kutucu.
- OffMilot RashicaWerder Bremen
- OnDavie SelkeWerder Bremen
Werder Bremen sub: Davie Selke comes on for Raschia as Bremen try to weather the storm.
The hosts goes close! Schalke, with their third corner of the second half already, almost find their leveller. Raman's flick-on is headed on by Sane and Gregoritsch flashes a venomous volley just over the bar.
Pavlenka is caught in two minds as a cross is sent into his box from deep. He tips it over the bar as Schalke win a rather cheap corner.
- OffWeston McKennieFC Schalke 04
- OnNassim BoujellabFC Schalke 04
Schalke sub: McKennie is replaced by Nassim Boujellab. That's a strange decision. McKennie is unquestionably their most creative player, but he was walking on a fine line with the referee and perhaps that's the reason why Wagner has taken him off.
Schalke finally register a shot on target! There's a bit more about the hosts since the restart and McKennie's cross falls into the path of Raman who stings the gloves of Pavlenka with a shot from a tight angle.
McKennie, already on a yellow card, gets a stern talking to from the referee. He's perhaps fortunate to be still on the pitch after catching Osako with his arm. Bremen aren't happy.
A chance for Schalke as Miranda centres a dangerous low cross from the right but Bremen clear their lines. Moments later, the Schalke full-back proves a menace once again, winning a free-kick which Gregoritsch heads wide from the delivery.
It's no surprise that McKennie is trying to set the tempo for Schalke but he's well off target with a shot from distance that was never troubling Pavlenka.
- OffLeonardo BittencourtWerder Bremen
- OnYuya OsakoWerder Bremen
Schalke have made a much-needed tactical change and a double substitution sees them line up in a 4-4-2 formation in the second half. Bastian Oczpika and Benito Raman replaced Todibo and Matondo at the break. Meanwhile, the injured Bittencourt made way for Yuya Osako for Bremen.
- End of 1st Half
Half-time: Bittencourt limps off the field as the referee blows the whistle for the interval. It's been the same old story for Schalke who have lacked creativity and looked suspect at the back. They're behind and remain in huge trouble unless they can turn things around in the second half.
Bremen's goalscorer Bittencourt isn't moving too freely at the moment. It appears he has picked up a knock.
There will be three minutes of added time to play at the end of the first half.
- Yellow cardWeston McKennieFC Schalke 04
Yellow card! Frustration is creeping into Schalke's game as McKennie is the third player in blue to be booked for a foul on Friedl close to the touchline. The US international is now suspended for the trip to Union Berlin next week.
Sargent drops the shoulder to leave Miranda in his wake and wins a corner as his cross is blocked. From the resulting set-piece, Moisander heads over.
Over! Full of confidence, Bittencourt tries his luck from distance once more after a battling run through midfield from Eggestein. This time, however, the Bremen attacker gets too much height on his shot and it whistles over the Schalke bar.
Here's the moment of magic you've all been waiting for...
Wide! Caligiuri's whipped delivery picks out McKennie at the back post but with the angle against the young American, he can only head wide.
Schalke win a free-kick on the left flank and Sane will be brought forward to contest Caligiuri's delivery.
The momentum is back with Bremen, who have been by far the better side so far. They fully deserve their lead. The pressure is all on Schalke now, but with just two in their last eight games, where are the goals going to come from?
- GoalLeonardo BittencourtWerder Bremen
GOAL! Schalke 0-1 Werder Bremen (Bittencourt): What a beautiful strike by Bittencourt! Todibo is closed down by Klaassen in midfield, Rashica rolls it Bittencourt, who from 25 yards, smashes the ball past Nubel into the top right hand corner for his fourth goal of the season.
There's a bit more purpose about Schalke now after a dreadful opening 20 minutes. Now Kenny bursts down the right flank but the Everton loanee shanks his cross out play.
McKennie makes a trademark run from deep with the intention of latching onto a neat through ball from the left but there's just too much zip on the pass and Pavlenka is off his line quickly to gather for Bremen.
I wonder how this will age...
- Yellow cardJean-Clair TodiboFC Schalke 04
Yellow card! Todibo will be walking on egg shells for the remainder of the game after being a booking. The Schalke defender pushed Osako. The resulting free-kick delivery was curled straight into the arms of Nubel, though.
Signs of promise from Schalke in recent moments. They aren't sitting just as deep as they once were and enjoying just a little more possession now.
Schalke finally work a nice move down the left flank as Caligiuri finds space to dig out a cross into the penalty area but Klaassen is there to head the danger clear for Bremen.
- Yellow cardSebastian LangkampWerder Bremen
Yellow card! For a moment Bremen are caught out in the centre of the park and McKennie, who seems like the only player in Royal Blue with the capability to inject energy in midfield, is brought down on the counter-attack. He wins a free-kick with the perpetrator Langkamp going into the book.
Schalke have been second to every ball and for some time now they haven't been able to get out of their own half. Bremen dictating the pace and tempo of the contest and although they have yet to create a clear cut opportunity, it seems inevitable they will open up Schalke sooner rather than later.
More incompetence from Schalke's midfield as they concede possession in a central area and then a free-kick. It has been a shambles from Wagner's men so far.
Bremen's pressure is almost relentless but playing deep in his own half home striker Gregoritsch buys Schalke some breathing space by winning a free-kick.
In fact, Bremen have had 80 per cent of the possession so far. That's quite an incredible stat, considering Schalke are the home team. Klaassen tries his luck from distance now but it takes a deflection off Sane and the shot sits up nicely for Nubel to make his first save of the afternoon.
Bremen continue to dominate the possession but it has been a cagey enough start. The first goal could prove pivotal.
Schalke are keen to impose themselves on the opposition early on here, as Caliguiri catches Raschica with a rather hefty challenge. It prompts anger on the Bremen bench, with the fourth official getting the brunt of their frustration.
Bremen force a couple of quick-fire corners as they apply the early pressure on the hosts. The most threatening delivery sees Gregoritsch climb above his own goalkeeper to head clear.
Vogt, who is only back from injury, is back on his feet but he continues to limp. Bremen will monitor the situation closely for the next few minutes.
- Yellow cardMichael GregoritschFC Schalke 04
Yellow card! Ouch! Bremen's Vogt is wincing in pain after a late and high tackle from Gregoritsch, who is deservedly booked. It's unclear if he can continue at this point.

The action begins!
We are running a little late, but the sun is shining in Gelsenkirchen and it should be a great contest.
Five minutes until kick-off now. It's Schalke versus Werder Bremen, it's LIVE and it's NEXT!
Here's your TEN minute warning. Bremen have won on their last three competitive trips to Schalke, and recorded 15 wins in Gelsenkirchen overall - more than against any other club. Who will come out on top today?
It has been a miserable year for both clubs, who have recorded just three wins between them. Bremen come in as the form side, however, having followed a 1-0 win over Freiburg with a goalless home draw to Borussia Monchengladbach on Tuesday night, as they strive to extend their 39-year top-flight status.
When Schalke edged past Bremen on a 1-0 scoreline earlier this season, Wagner's men moved to within three points behind leaders Bayern. But their form fell off a cliff and they start today's game five points behind sixth-placed Wolfsburg and are currently on a ten-game winless run. Things got even worse for Schalke in midweek when they lost to strugglers Fortuna Dusseldorf. Another defeat today could see them fall as low as 11th.
FACT: Schalke have recorded more Bundesliga wins over Bremen than against any other Bundesliga club (38).
Just the one change for Bremen as the suspended Milos Veljkovic makes way for Kevin Vogt in a defence that has kept back-to-back clean sheets.
Goalkeeper Alexander Nubel is restored to Schalke's line-up, as Markus Schubert drops to the bench. Nubel has been out of favour at the club since agreeing a deal to join Bayern Munich in the summer, but a series of substandard performances from Schubert means Wagner has little choice but to swap keepers. Meanwhile, there are two other changes, with Jean-Clair Todibo replacing Matija Nastasic and Michael Gregoritsch is chosen in attack ahead of Guido Burgstaller.
Schalke XI (3-4-3): Nubel; Kabak, Sane, Todibo; Kenny, Schopf, Miranda; Caligiuri, Gregoritsch, Matondo.. subs: Schubert, Nastasic, Raman, Kutucu, Boujellab, Burgstaller, Oczpka, Becker, Thiaw. /// Werder Bremen XI (3-4-3): Pavlenka; Langkamp, Vogt, Moisander; Gebre Selassie, M Eggestein, Klaassen, Freidl; Bittencourt, Sargent, Rashica.. subs: Kapino, Lang, Augustinsson, Osako, Selke, Bartles, Gross, Woltemade, Bargfrede.
