After brushing Barcelona aside in the Champions League on Wednesday, Bayern Munich return to league action hoping to extend their lead at the top of Bundesliga. Niakhate wins the flick-on from the resulting free-kick, it takes a deflection off Hernandez and Mainz have a corner, which comes to nothing.

A long throw-in launched into the Bayern penalty area causes the hosts some trouble but they eventually manage to clear their lines. Moments later, they have a free-kick to defend after Upamecano fouls Burdkardt.

It's early days of course and it's worth bearing in mind that Bayern conceded twice before beating Mainz 5-2 last season.

Mainz could have easily fell sorry for themselves after their strong penalty appeal was dismissed but they picked up where they left off immediately, attacked again and got their reward.

He holds off the challenge of Hernandez and stands up a cross for Oniswio in the middle. He attacks it with his head, leaving Neuer with no chance! Mainz are ahead!

No penalty! There was contact but not enough for a spot-kick, according to VAR and the referee. Have Bayern got away with one?

Penalty appeal! Upamecano appears to stand on the foot of Lee and the Mainz forward takes a tumble inside the Bayern penalty area. The referee initially waves away Mainz's appeals but now VAR is having a look!

Now at the opposite end Onisiwo pulls it back for Lee who has team mates either side but goes for goal and Tolisso is in the way to charge down.

Mainz are finding space on the left flank - this time Martin drives forward and delivers a superb cross. But once again the visitors haven't enough attackers in the box to contest it.

Close! Lovely, fluid football from Bayern as Lewandowski holds it up before switching it to Muller. It's fed to Pavard whose shot is saved. Davies mishits his first attempt but gets a second bite of the cherry and his effort is deflected wide by Widmer.

Bayern chance! Davies is played in by Muller but can't keep his effort down. Is that a sign that the hosts are about to get into their groove?

Shot! Barreiro is afforded a pocket of space in a central area and he unloads with a shot but it's straight forward for Neuer. Mainz manager Bo Svensson will be encouraged by what he has witnessed so far.
