Bayern Munich 8-1 Mainz - Harry Kane scores hat-trick, moves on to 30 Bundesliga goals as champions romp to victory

Harry Kane was on fire for Bayern Munich on Saturday as the England captain scored a fabulous hat-trick during an impressive 8-1 win over Mainz. Kane also laid on a brilliant assist for Jamal Musiala as Bayern continued to get back on track after they qualified for the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals by beating Lazio in midweek. Kane is now up to an astonishing 30 goals in the Bundesliga.
Harry Kane made it 30 goals for the season in the Bundesliga with a hat-trick as Bayern Munich thrashed Mainz 8-1 at home to keep their title hopes alive.
Thomas Tuchel's side, in confident mood after progressing to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in midweek, made a blistering start with Kane converting Jamal Musiala's pass from close range.
Seven minutes later, a quick free-kick led to Leon Goretzka bundling the ball in. The visitors reduced their deficit when Nadiem Amiri smashed the ball in from distance and Brajan Gruda should have equalised before the break but blazed his effort over.
Kane made Mainz pay when he scored his second with a smart finish from Goretzka's pass. The reigning champions looked to have sealed victory at the start of the second half when Musiala's cross found Thomas Muller for a tap-in.
Serge Gnabry came on after an injury layoff and made it six with a delicious backheel from Goretzka's deep cross, his first goal since May. Kane completed his hat-trick in the final 20 minutes after heading in at the far post following a corner.
It was Goretzka who had the last word after scoring in stoppage time for his second goal of the game. The result sees Bayern move seven points behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen, who play on Sunday against Wolfsburg.
TALKING POINT - A good week for Bayern
A real statement victory for the Bavarians, who are showing they are not giving up their Bundesliga title without a fight. Leverkusen still have a healthy lead but with nine rounds of games remaining after this weekend, it will be a nervy time for Xabi Alonso's side.
They do not want to blow it like Borussia Dortmund did on the final day of last season.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Harry Kane (Bayern Munich)
I am running out of superlatives for the England striker's first season in Germany. Followed up his key goals against Lazio in midweek with another three, all clinical finishes inside the box.
