Messi scored his 600th career Barcelona with a sublime free-kick in the Nou Camp – his second of the night – after Luis Suarez had put the home side ahead.

For large parts of the match Liverpool applied real pressure to the newly-crowned Spanish champions, forcing them to give the ball away time after time.

Liverpool also had a number of very good chances to score on the night, but a mixture of fine goalkeeping from Marc-Andre ter Stegen and poor finishing saw them fail to score an important away goal.

Klopp’s side will have to produce something truly magical if they’re to reach the final for a second successive season, but the Liverpool manager wasn’t too disheartened after the match.

“Football is like this. It’s about scoring goals. They scored three and we scored none,” Klopp said.

“The performance was so good. It was a super game. But when you play against Barcelona a few moments are enough.”

“I’m really happy with the performance but not happy with the result. In football you don’t get grades, you get hard results. I don’t know if we can play much better.”

It was another memorable night Messi’s career, reaching 600 goals in just 683 games, and Klopp couldn’t help but smile about the free-kick.

“Two goals were okay but the third goal from Messi... My God...The ball was unstoppable,” he said
