A fabulous free-kick from Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred gave his side a 2-1 victory in the first leg of their Champions League clash against Roma.
Talented young midfielder Cengiz Under opened the scoring for Roma just before half-time but Facundo Ferreyra levelled matters with a fine low finish under Alisson.

The Roma keeper was left with no chance from Fred's incredible free-kick just under 20 minutes later.
There were late handbags between Taison and Diego Perotti, with both players booked by the referee.

TALKING POINT

Is that the goal to secure Fred a big-money move? He's been linked to Manchester City before - but that sublime free kick will have moved him up several managers' shopping lists.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Facundo Ferrerya (Shakhtar Donetsk): The Argentine can't help but find himself involved in goals - he's now been part of five of Shakhtar's seven in the Champions League this season.

KEY MOMENTS

6' CHANCE! That corner is so tempting! Dzeko has a touch but Pyatov blocks it on the line, and it bounces back to Fazio, who has his shot blocked.
41' GOAL! What an unusual goal! Cengiz has been excellent all evening, and it's a great ball from Dzeko, slipping the youngster through, and although the shot itself isn't fantastic, with Pyatov getting a deflection at close range, it's enough to give Roma the lead.
52' GOAL! There's the equaliser, taken sweetly by Ferreyra, one on one, and slid home with his right foot.

71' GOAL! And after a bit of debate with Bernard, Fred takes the free kick and lashes it home.
90'+3 CLOSE! Last-ditch save either from Alisson or some other body part in his defence as Ferreyra looks to increase the Shakhtar lead.

KEY STATISTICS

  • Roma have failed to keep a clean sheet in 25 straight away Champions League games. Only Celtic (30 games in December 2016) have ever been on a longer such run in the competition.
  • All three of Shakhtar Donetsk’s knockout stage wins in the Champions League have been against Roma. Indeed, three of Roma’s last five defeats in the competition’s Round of 16 have been against the Ukrainian side.
  • Shakhtar have now found the net at least twice in six consecutive home Champions League games – the joint-longest current streak of scoring 2+ goals in successive games on home soil in the competition (along with PSG).
  • Shakhtar have won all four of their home games in the tournament this season, their best such run since their last win over Roma in March 2011 (five straight wins). Indeed, the only other side to have won four home matches in this season’s competition are Bayern Munich.
  • Cengiz Ünder (20 years, 222 days) is Roma's second youngest Champions League goal scorer after Antonio Cassano in October 2002 against KRC Genk (20 years, 82 days) and the youngest ever Turkish scorer in the competition, surpassing Hakan Calhanoglu (20 years, 235 days) when he scored for Bayer Leverkusen against Benfica in October 2014.
  • Edin Dzeko has been directly involved in five goals in the Champions League this season (three goals, two assists), his best ever return in a single campaign in the competition.
  • Fred is the 14th different Brazilian player to score for Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League; only FC Porto (21) have had more scorers from Brazil in the competition’s history.
