Champions League quarter-finals, Camp Nou – Barcelona 3 (Messi 16 20, Coutinho 61) Manchester United 0 – Barcelona win 4-0 on aggregate
Barcelona breezed into the Champions League semi-finals with a 3-0 win over Manchester United at the Camp Nou, completing a 4-0 aggregate victory.
United wasted a brilliant early chance as part of a good start to the game when Marcus Rashford toe-poked over in the first minute, but they quickly rolled over.
Lionel Messi seized on some poor play from Ashley Young to rifle in a low shot to the far post, and four minutes later, it was two. This time Messi simply had to trundle in a shot to the fraying David de Gea, who saw the ball roll underneath him to settle the tie.
On the hour mark, Philippe Coutinho fired in a screamer into the top corner, after weeks of speculation he will make the move to United in the summer, and they would be lucky to have him going by this performance.
Barcelona are likely to face Liverpool, who take a 2-0 lead to Porto on Wednesday night, in the last four. On this evidence, they look ominously dangerous for the rest of the competition.
TALKING POINT
Is David de Gea losing it? Even in tonight’s game he made a vital goalline intervention, and against West Ham he was both iffy and brilliant. It seems like when he is finally demanding what he is worth from United, he can no longer claim to be unimpeachably good. After years of strain at the hands of the clowns ahead of him, he appears to be losing his way. Few could blame him.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Philippe Coutinho (Barcelona): People might claim that Lionel Messi was the best player, and his one excellent shot was very impressive. However, Coutinho was a constant threat from the left and he has shown the goalscoring from his Liverpool days which should allow him to kick on at the Nou Camp, if he is supported by fans and players.
