Football news - Manchester United stun PSG to go through after VAR drama in Paris

A stunning finale at the Parc des Princes saw Marcus Rashford’s 94th-minute penalty send Manchester United through to the Champions League quarter-finals on away goals and put Paris Saint-Germain on the receiving end of another stunning comeback in Europe.

Referee Damir Skomina consulted VAR after Diogo Dalot’s strike appeared to strike the elbow of Presnel Kimpembe, and pointed to the spot after two minutes of deliberation before Rashford powered the penalty past Guanluigi Buffon.

Romelu Lukaku had put United 2-1 ahead at half-time after capitalising on mistakes from Thilo Kehrer and Buffon, but Juan Bernat’s goal was still enough to send PSG through.

However, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer threw on teenagers Tahith Chong and Mason Greenwood in search of the vital third goal, it was local boy Rashford who kept his cool to send an injury-depleted United side into the last eight.

The late drama was reminiscent of PSG’s last-16 exit two years ago, when they threw away a 4-0 first-leg lead over Barcelona to lose 6-5 on aggregate, and that is now the third season in a row the French champions have been knocked out at the last-16 stage.

Dalot’s strike appeared to deflect off Kimpembe and go out for a corner… Few batted any eyelid but there was Dalot appealing for a penalty. Moments later, referee Skomina is told to consult VAR, and knowing it was one of the biggest decisions of his career, he took his time before making the decision. It looked harsh, there is no denying that, and Kimpembe looked simply stunned having turned his back on the shot and seeing the ball inadvertently hit his elbow.

Victor Lindelof – A real smash-and-grab affair from United in attack, but it was Lindelof, and Smalling, who defended valiantly to reduce Mbappe and co to just the one goal.
