It is complete heart-break for Ajax who have somehow lost this highly-entertaining and dramatic game of football. They are just about still in the tie, however, they have it all to do at the Bernabeu.
What an opportunity for Ajax to level! Dolberg is played through but he slips at the vital moment and scuffs the ball at Courtois.
THREE minutes to be added on.
Ajax boss ten Hag will be so proud of his players tonight, but ultimately it looks increasingly like they will be on the losing side.
Again, VAR was reviewed to see if there was a foul in the build-up, but the referee saw nothing wrong and the goal will stand.
- GoalMarco AsensioReal Madrid
GOAL! Ajax 1-2 Real Madrid
Asensio steals in unnoticed and restores Madrid's lead. Talk about smash and grab! The midfielder races in front of Van de Beek to meet Carvaja's delicious cross and he converts from close range.
Wonderful play from the impressive Tadic who uses great strength to hold off his man and deliver a cross for Dolberg, but the forward has a lot to do. He fails to direct his header on target.
Spurs now lead 3-0 over Dortmund. Wow, what a great result that is for Pochettino.
- Yellow cardLucas VázquezReal Madrid
Vazquez goes into the book for a cynical foul on Neres.
A back-pass is played to Onana, the ball takes a nasty bobble over an empty plastic cup, as Ajax concede an unfortunate corner.
Asensio curls one inches over Onana's bar as Real almost respond with a second.
Now that they have their goal, can Ajax go on to score a second?
- GoalHakim ZiyechAjax
GOAL! Ajax 1-1 Real Madrid
Ajax have their equaliser! They're all square with the European champions! Neres pulls it back for Ziyech who shows great composure by side-footing the ball past Courtois, sending the home fans wild!
Dolberg is involved in the action immediately, breaking the offside trap to latch onto a through-pass but he leans back and thrashes his shot over the bar.

REAL MADRID SUB
Marco Asensio takes the place of the goalscorer Benzema.
- OffLasse SchöneAjax
- OnKasper DolbergAjax
Kasper Dolberg replaces Schone in the home side's first change. It's time to go for broke.
Ziyech curls the ball around the Real defensive wall but can't generate enough power in his free-kick to trouble Courtois.
- Yellow cardSergio ReguilónReal Madrid
Reguilon goes into the book for a foul on Mazraoui.
That was Benzema's 60th Champions League goal. He is fourth on the all-time list, with only Ronaldo, Messi and Raul ahead of him.
What is it about this Real Madrid side and the Champions League? They are aiming to reach the quarter-final for the NINTH consecutive year.
This is a mental test of this young Ajax side now. If they concede another they will have a mountain to climb in Madrid in the second-leg.
Is there any way back now for Ajax? This is heartbreaking on the Dutch. Undoubtedly, they have been the better side this evening but their lack of quality in the final third has cost them. They're behind in the tie, and Real have their away goal.

- OnLucas VázquezReal Madrid
REAL MADRID SUB
Lucas Vazquez comes on for Bale.
- GoalKarim BenzemaReal Madrid
GOAL! Ajax 0-1 Real Madrid
Benzema silences the Amsterdam ArenA as he smashes the ball into the back of the net with a devastating finish. Credit goes to Vinicius Junior who goes on a mazy run on the left, checks inside and rides a couple of challenges before rolling the ball to set the Frenchman up on a plate.
You have to pity Ajax here.
Real are playing the ball around much crisper in the last few minutes, though. Would Ajax settle for a 0-0 draw now?
Madrid probing here, but the Ajax defence is holding their shape well. This has been an admirable performance from the Dutch, both defensively and on the counter.
- Yellow cardHakim ZiyechAjax
Ziyech is booked for a late foul on Bale.
AJAX CHANCE! The Madrid defence continue to play at sixes and sevens. Tadic plays in Neres who bears down at goal... but can only fire it straight at Courtois. Ajax need to take one of these chances soon.
Just a hint that Real are beginning to find their rhythm. Modric backheels the ball to Carvajal who picks out Benzema... but his first-time effort is well held by Onana.
Bale races down the left and lifts a cross into the middle, but he fails to pick out a team mate and Mazraoui calmly clears.
Not for the first time this season, Ajax have gone toe-to-toe with the best that Europe has to offer. But how will they be affected by the VAR controversially, mentally?
Tottenham have taken the lead against Dortmund through Son in the other last-16 Champions League match being played this evening.
- 2nd Half
Anywho, the second-half is underway. Madrid were woeful in the opening 45 minutes and Solari will demand his players make a huge improve after the restart.
The historic first use of VAR in the Champions League has been highly controversial. It is incredibly cruel on Ajax who looked like they had taken a deserved lead, but the replays show that Tadic was millimetres offside when Tagliafico's header nestled in the corner of the net. Ultimately, the correct decision has been made - even if it did take almost three minutes.
- End of 1st Half
Jeers greet the half-time whistle. The home supporters think their side has been robbed after the referee used VAR to rule out what looked like a certain goal.
Ajac win a free-kick, right on the edge of the penalty area. Courtois is off his line to punch it clear.
Two minutes of stoppage time will be added on at the end of a dramatic first-half.
I think the goal was ruled out because Tadic was offside, but then again I cannot be entirely sure. Perhaps he fouled Courtois.
SHOT! Tadic drops his shoulder to create room for a shot inside the box, but gets his effort badly wrong, toe-poking the ball well wide.
What a let-off for Courtois! He was left red-faced after spilling De Ligt's effort but he has been saved by VAR.
No, the referee chalks off the goal. Tadic is adjudged to have been offside and interfering with play.
It is still 0-0.
But wait, the goal is being assessed by VAR. Will it stand?
GOAL! Ajax 1-0 Real Madrid
Oh my, Ajax are ahead! But it's nothing more than they deserve. It's a howler from Courtois! The hosts in a corner, the former Chelsea goalkeeper spills De Ligt's header and Tagliafico nods in the follow-up!
BIG, BIG SAVE!
Incisive passes from Ajax carves the Real defence open and sets De Jong up on a plate, but Courtois is off his line to deny his shot at point-blank range. Ajax could be out of sight by now!
CHANCE! A cross is lifted to the back post where Tadic controls it. He stands up another cross but this time Casemiro makes the interception.
Tadic is involved once more as he pulls a cross back for Van de Beek who makes a run from midfield to meet it, but Reguilon is well positioned to make the tackle.
Tadic is released behind the Real defence with a sublime pass down the channel, but the linesman raises his flag for offside. That was close. In fact, the replays show he was marginally onside. Real are riding their luck here.
Neres continues to find space between the Real defence and midfield. He races into the Real penalty box but Carvahal does well to make an important challenge.
OFF THE POST!
Dear me, that is agonising for Ajax! Tadic shields the ball really well and then rifles a volley at goal from 25 yards. Courtois can only watch as it cannons off the woodwork before bouncing clear.
Mazraoui skips away from his marker down the right flank, but his cross is tame and Ramos easily cuts it out.
Lovely give-and-go football from Ajax on the edge of the box, but Tadic's through-pass to Neres carries too much pace and Real have a goal-kick.
Reguilon races out of defence to lead another Real counter-attack, but Taglifico reads the situation well to intercept his pass searching for Benzema.
Carvahal looks to find Benzema - who has virtually been a spectator thus far - with a curling cross from deep, but it's too close to Onana who is off his line confidently to collect.
Madrid are beginning to impose themselves on the game as they enjoy a prolonged spell of possession. Reguilon, given the nod ahead of Marcelo, looks a useful player in the defence.
Kroos swings in the corner, Bale rises highest to meet it but fails to generate enough power in his header to test Onana.
Vinicius Junior springs into life after receiving a pass from Kroos on the edge of the box. He cuts inside and smacks one at goal. Onana has to be at full-stretch to tip it over the bar!
The game is being played almost entirely in Madrid's half. The question is, how long can Ajax play at such a high intensity?
It's disappointing from Schone who strikes his free-kick effort straight at the wall.
The lively Ziyech is fouled by Nacho and Ajax have a free-kick in a central position, 30 yards out.
AJAX CHANCE! A give-and-go between Tadic and Mazraoui releases the latter fed in space on the right but he can only drag his shot wide. He's annoyed with himself but replays show the last touch was off a Real defender. Goal-kick says the referee.
Ajax exuding confidence in the early stages here.
End-to-end action in Amsterdam! Casemiro makes a crucial challenge on the edge of the box on Tadic and Real break. Modric moes the ball to Bale on the right but curls it straight down the middle for Onana.
Another loose pass out from the Real defence hands Ajax possession once more and now the hosts have a free-kick after Bale commits a foul
Madrid aren't doing a great job at keeping a hold of possession. Casemiro is wrestled off the ball in midfield as Ajax counter but the final pass is overcooked and Courtois is off his line to smother.
The Dutch are up for this! They are operating with a high-press, hurrying and harrying the visitors in the early stages.
- 1st Half
After a minute's silence for Emiliano Sala, the game gets underway.
This is what they have been waiting for, Ajax play their first Champions League knockout game in 13 years - and what an atmosphere in the stadium where 53,000 will witness a revisitation of history.
FIVE MINUTE WARNING
Here is a reminder of the starting XIs, as we edge closer to kick-off at Amsterdam ArenA...
Ajax: Onana, Mazraoui, De Ligt, Blind, Tagliafico, Van de Beek, De Jong, Schone; Ziyech, Neres, Tadic.
Real Madrid: Courtois; Carvajal, Ramos, Varane, Reguilon; Casemiro, Modric, Kroos; Bale, Benzema
ten Hag: "This opponent demands a lot, but we're looking forward to it. We're confident we can do it. We're physically fit and with the right team spirit, we can go far.
Top teams can play very offensively, but also shut up tight and then break at pace. Real Madrid have a very experienced team, with guys like [Sergio] Ramos, [Toni] Kroos, [Luka] Modrić and [Karim] Benzema, but also a good mix. It is going to be a great challenge for us to achieve something positive. We know we can be strong on this stage, and certainly in Amsterdam."
Solari: " Motivation is always something that you have to look for, or find, within yourself. Ideally, you'll always carry it with you. But for players who have reached this level - playing at Real Madrid and playing a match every three days - the motivation is inbuilt. They've got it."
It is slightly surprising that both Vinicius Junior and Bale start this evening, in what looks like an ultra-attacking Real Madrid team.
Meanwhile, Sergio Ramos makes his 600th appearance for Madrid tonight, but he's just one yellow card away from suspension and missing the second leg
Ajax have lost their last six games in European competition against Real Madrid, scoring only two goals and conceding 20. Ajax's last victory against the Merengues dates back to November 1995, a 2-0 Champions League group stage victory at the Bernabeu with goals from Jari Litmanen and Patrick Kluivert.
GARETH BALE PLAYS
The Welshman is rewarded for scoring in the Madrid derby on Sunday, as Santiago Solari makes two changes with Raphael Varane replacing Nacho who misses out through illness.
FRENKIE DE JONG STARTS
The wonderkid, who joins Barcelona in the summer, has recovered from the knock he picked up at the weekend and starts in what could be billed as his first El Clasico.
There are few surprises from the hosts, with David Neres and Hakim Ziyech starting on the flanks and Dusan Tadic spearheading the attack.
Ajax XI: Onana, Mazraoui, De Ligt, Blind, Tagliafico, Van de Beek, De Jong, Schone; Ziyech, Neres, Tadic.
Subs: Lamprou, Kristensen, Veltman, Sinkgraven, Huntelaar, Dolberg, De Wit.
Real Madrid XI: Courtois; Carvajal, Ramos, Varane, Reguilon; Casemiro, Modric, Kroos; Bale, Benzema, Vinicius.
Subs: Navas, Vallejo, Mariano, Marcelo, Lucas V, Asensio, Ceballos.
Hello and welcome to Eurosport's LIVE text commentary of the Champions League last-16 knock-out match between Ajax and Real Madrid.
Erik ten Hag's side are 12 matches unbeaten in Europe this season, but domestically they have dropped eight points in four games, with Matthijs De Ligt describing their last defeat to Heracles as 'scandalous'.
The 19-year-old went further, saying his Ajax side would 'get slaughtered' if they performed like that in the match with Real Madrid, who are targeting a fourth consecutive Champions League trophy.
The Dutch giants are bound to up their game against one of the world's greatest teams ever, surely? Kick-off is 45 minutes away.
