FULL TIME! What an unbelievable night for Ajax. Real Madrid have been dumped out of the Champions League. Having won 2-1 in Amsterdam, they have been embarrassed 4-1 in their own back yard. It's a humiliation, and a result that will resonate around Europe. For the first time in four years, it will not be Real Madrid's name on the trophy as Ajax reach the quarter-finals for the first time in 16 years.
- Red cardNachoReal Madrid
RED CARD! I thought it couldn't get worse for Madrid. But it has. Nacho is initially booked for cynically bringing down Van de Beek and he is then involved in a scrap as he rakes his studs down the Ajax man! Referee Felix Brych shows him the red!
Bale is no barely walking he's clearly in need of having that ankle assessed. It caps a miserable, miserable night for the Spanish giants. Who would want Ajax in the next round after this?
As if the night wasn't bad enough for Real, Gareth Bale has gone up for a header and come down on his right ankle. He's in quite a bit of pain, but Madrid have used up all of their subs!
- OffCasemiroReal Madrid
- OnFederico ValverdeReal Madrid
SUB! Final change for Madrid as Casemiro is withdrawn and replaced by Valverde. This game is over with Ajax enjoying possession, toying with the dethroned champions.
OVER! Ziyech has to score this! A stray pass escapes Modric and Tadic has all the time in the world to set up Ziyech just three yards out, but he inexplicably steers his left-foot shot over the cross bar! That should've been five!
SAVE! Well Ajax have got away with one here as De Jong over-plays with it at the back. Modric is clean through and should go for goal himself, but he selfishly sets up Benzema, who slips and Bale's shot from the angle is subsequently smothered by Onana. Sloppy from De Jong, on an otherwise brilliant display.
- OffNoussair MazraouiAjax
- OnJoël VeltmanAjax
SUB! Ajax make their third and final change of the evening as Noussair Mazraoui - who has been excellent at full-back tonight to overcome that early booking - is now replaced by Joel Veltman. It feels like the end of an era at Madrid, this.
The Ajax fans know they are almost there. They sing "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" to their Real Madrid supporters, who are fast exiting the stadium.
I'm not sure how Santiago Solari is going to survive this. After two defeats to Barcelona, he is now facing the very real prospect of being knocked out of the Champions League. His side need three goals in the last quarter of an hour. Madrid have been quarter-finalists at least in the last eight years.
- OffDavid NeresAjax
- OnKasper DolbergAjax
SUB! It's a double change for Ajax as Kasper Dolberg is on for Dolberg.
- OffLasse SchöneAjax
- OnDani de WitAjax
SUB! Ajax make a change immediately as the goalscorer Schone is replaced by Dani de Wit.
- GoalLasse SchöneAjax
GOAL! Forget that Madrid comeback, it's not happening. Everything Ajax are doing tonight is turning to black and gold. What a goal! Lasse Schone means this. It's a free-kick from out on the byline, and he disguises his cross before curling his delivery over the head of the embarrassed Courtois!
- GoalMarco AsensioReal Madrid
GOAL! There's one for Madrid. Maybe the comeback is on. How they needed that goal. There's a glimpse of a route back into this contest as Sergio Reguilon finds Marco Asensio to sweep home his shot into the corner via the post! Madrid need two more...
SAVE! Real Madrid are in need of an immediate response and they very nearly get it as Asensio sets up Bale down the right but it's a tame effort and a comfortable save with the legs by Onana. Carvajal blazes the round from the edge of the area over!
GOAL!!!!! He's given the goal. After three and a half minutes! Referee Felix Brych points to the centre circle to indicate that after several replays, Mazraoui is adjudged to have kept the bal in play.
The champions are now in real strife. Now the Ajax fans can celebrate!!
There's a long pause as the incident is being checked back via the TV monitors. It's taken two and a half minutes so far...
- GoalDušan TadicAjax
GOAL! This is beyond extraordinary! Tadic has rifled this one into the top corner. It's an absolute rocket! Van de Beek sets him up, he cuts onto his left boot and leaves Courtois with absolutely no chance... but referee Berdych is checking the goal on VAR... in the build-up Mazraoui may not have kept the ball in play...
WIDE! Another good chance goes begging for Real Madrid and it's a surprise to see the ball veer wide this time as it's Karim Benzema who opens up his body and shoots a yard wide from the angle!
Alarm bells again for Madrid with the ease at which Ajax are suddenly through on goal once more. Tadic leads the break after being released by Van de Beek. He chops inside and has Neres to his right but Kroos does well to make an important interception.
SAVE! Ajax retain an attacking threat as Courtois is now forced into action, denying the lively Donny van de Beek's left-foot shot. Tadic was again at the heart of the action, releasing his team-mate for the attempt. One more Ajax goal now and Madrid would require three...
OVER! Madrid believe a goal is imminent as Asensio works the ball into Benzema. De Ligt gets as tight as he can to force the Frenchman to attempt the overhead kick, and his shot is not troubling Onana.
CLOSE! So nearly a route back for Madrid as Ajax fail to clear Modric's cross. He regains possession and sets up Asensio on the right of the Ajax box, but his curled shot is just wide of the post!
The last three Champions League games Sergio Ramos has missed, Real Madrid have lost. Who is going to lead them out of this mess?
- 2nd Half
Can Real Madrid dig out a result here? They were out on the field a good few minutes before Ajax ready for this second half.
HALF TIME STATS!
Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong made 28 passes in those opening 45 minutes, 85 per cent of which were completed - more than any other player.
Dusan Tadic, who played a part in both Ajax goals, ran 6.6km - more than any other player.
- End of 1st Half
Well, this wasn't in the script. Ajax are in front 2-0 on the night and 3-2 ahead on aggregate in the tie! Frowns all over the faces of Real Madrid players as they trudge off. They've got work to do in the second half.
That's the second time Madrid have hit the woodwork, but it's increasingly looking like being not their night!
We're into two added minutes as Kroos' corner is headed wide by Nacho!
POST! That's the Gareth Bale we all know as he scampers clear down the left, but from an ever-tighter angle, he can only chip his effort onto the post!
Moments later, Benzema tries to cross from the left and it strikes the arm of De Ligt but he's very close to the cross, and not even with VAR is that going to be a penalty.
BLOCK! Blind shows all of his experience to make a courageous block to deny Asensio from Bale's cute pass. Real turning it up just before the break. Can they level the tie?
There's a lot of concerned faces inside the Bernabeu and all the noise is coming from a pocket of red and white high up in the stands.. Bale has moved over to try his luck on the left-hand side with Mazraoui already on a booking.
OFF THE LINE! Here's Bale in an attacking sense for the first time as he collects the ball on the left and picks out a decent cross for Benzema. The Frenchman reaches it before the Ajax stopper Onana but Tagliafico is back there to head off the line!
- OffVinícius JúniorReal Madrid
- OnMarco AsensioReal Madrid
SUB! Real Madrid are now back to their full compliment as Marco Ansenio replaces the distraught Vinicius, who left the field in tears.
SHOT! Real Madrid are on the ropes here as Courtois makes the save low to his right to deny Ziyech and Bale does well to not give away a penalty on the rebound as Neres forces the corner off Nacho.
WIDE! There's more problems for Madrid here as after Vinicius opts to shoot rather than pass to an unmarked Bale in the centre, the Brazilian stays down holding his leg. His shot crashes into the side-netting, but he's stayed off the pitch to receive treatment. It doesn't look good...
- Yellow cardDani CarvajalReal Madrid
Carvajal has been found out already on a few occasions tonight and he can't cope with the pace and trickery of Neres, barging the Ajax man over to deservedly collect a yellow card.
- OffLucas VázquezReal Madrid
- OnGareth BaleReal Madrid
SUB! Heartache for Vazquez as he is unable to continue now due to an injury, but Gareth Bale has been summoned and will play the remaining 60 minutes of this game, plus the possibility of extra time. The Welshman gets a good reception from those inside the stadium...
Tadic has been the game's standout performer so far...
- Yellow cardNoussair MazraouiAjax
BOOKED! It's a compelling battle down that Real left flank but Noussair Mazraoui has overstepped the mark this time as he hauls down the young Brazilian Vinicius Jr and deservedly goes into the book. He'll miss the first leg of the next round if Ajax do indeed progress.
SAVE! Courtois has every right to look at his defenders and ask what on earth is going on as a simple long throw from Blind has Tadic away in the inside left channel. Without looking up, he fires low from the angle, but the big Belgian is able to get down to save with his feet!
SAVE! Straight down the other end in this breath-taking first half and Vinicius Jr does well to wriggle out of a challenge with Mazraoui to set up Casemiro for the shot but Onana is equal to it, diving to his left to plam the ball to safety!
CHANCE! Ajax should have a third! Madrid's defence is at sixes and sevens again as Carvajal is sucked in to the run of Tadic, allowing space for Ziyech to find Neres, but he can't wrap his foot around the shot with only Courtois to beat as the ball sails a yard wide!
Ajax are a clean sheet away from dumping out the three-time Champions League holders and they fully deserve their two-goal lead. No wonder their supporters are buzzing. Madrid haven't lost a knockout tie in nearly four years, a run of nine such encounters. That's on the line now.
- GoalDavid NeresAjax
GOAL!!! Ajax have doubled their lead! Tadic is involved once more, but this time he is taking on the entire Madrid midfield, an incredible pirouette takes him clear before David Neres takes the pass, rounds Courtois and tucks in a second!
Real are having to dig deep here as Kroos' corner runs through to Vazquez. He cuts onto his right foot and his ball is onto the boot of Varane, but he hooked shot is saved!
Ajax have done well to withstand their opponent's response to that early setback with Modric growing increasingly frustrated after being penalised for a foul on Tagliafico.
WIDE! The Croatian now sets up Kroos for a shot on the edge of the Ajax box, but he drags his left-foot effort comfortably wide.
CLOSE! Much better from Real as Vazquez combines with Benzema before feeding a ball through to Kroos. He just can't get it out of his feet, allowing Blind to make a crucial last-ditch block!
- GoalHakim ZiyechAjax
GOAL! Wow. Here's a cat among the pigeons as Ajax take full advantage of riding their luck at one end to take the lead! Dusan Tadic, of course, is involved as he carries the ball down the right and picks out the unmarked Hakim Ziyech to sidefoot his shot beyond Courtois!
OFF THE BAR! So close to an early opener for Madrid as Varane rises to meet Vazquez's cross from the right but his header crashes back out off the crossbar! Onana was rooted to the spot!
CRUNCH! Nice early reducer from the Ajax full-back Mazraoui on Vinicius Jr with referee Brych quick to spot the infringement. The visitors are keen to make their presence known in these early offerings with Lucas Vazquez next to feel the full force of an aerial challenge from Schone.
- 1st Half
KICK OFF! Real Madrid in their traditional all white get us underway.
So with Ajax having lost the first leg 2-1 in Amsterdam, they need to match or better that scoreline tonight. If Real were to lose 1-0, they would still progress. Classic away goals rule, you know the score!
Felix Brych is tonight's match official.
OUT COME THE TEAMS!
So here come the players out onto the pitch. Real Madrid have won the Champions League four times in the last five seasons. Juventus were the last team to eliminate Real in a Champions League knockout phase, back in the 2014-15 semi-finals. Can Ajax roll back the years? The Champions League anthem rings out! Kick off is moments away.
Real Madrid have won their last seven games in all competitions against Ajax (22 goals for, 3 against), the best ever run for the Spanish side against a single opponent in European competition.
Ajax's last victory against the Merengues was back in November 1995: 2-0 in the Champions League group stages at the Bernabeu with goals from Jari Litmanen and Patrick Kluivert.
In today's TRANSFER FOCUS, Gareth Bale's move to Manchester United is still on the cards, but his reported crazy wage demands may yet damage a potential deal...
There's around 4,000 Ajax supporters inside the Bernabeu making quite a noise, while many more fill the bars inside the city centre. They will make quite a racket if their side pulls off a big upset tonight. Here's a video that was doing the rounds on social media earlier...
WALKING A TIGHTROPE
Ajax have no fewer than six players who are currently one booking away from missing the next match. Those players are Daley Blind, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, Nicolas Tagliafico, Donny van de Beek and Hakim Ziyech. They must get past Real Madrid first though!
It's 22 years since Ajax progressed through a Champions League knockout stage tie - in the 1996-97 campaign when the Dutch side prevailed against Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Juventus in the semi-finals.
ICYMI - THAT BALE STORY
Gareth Bale’s agent has described the treatment received by some of the Real Madrid supporters as “nothing short of a disgrace”.
The forward was jeered off in Real Madrid’s 1-0 loss against rivals Barcelona at the Bernabeu on Saturday when he was replaced by Marco Asensio.
"This generation of Real fans will be talking about Gareth's goals for years to come. Frankly they should be ashamed of themselves,” said Barnett, as quoted by BBC and Sky Sports.
"Gareth deserves the greatest of respect. The way the Real fans have treated Gareth is nothing short of a disgrace."
100 per cent of teams to have won 2-1 away from home in the first leg of a Champions League knockout match have progressed to the next round (8 previous cases).
SOLARI: WE CAN COPE WITHOUT RAMOS
Real Madrid manager Santiago Solari is confident his starting XI can cope without their captain against the Dutch giants.
"I'm sad that he won't play. As you all know, he's a very important player for us, he's a leader," Solari said.
"We have players with experience and quality enough to replace him. Besides, Sergio's personality is imbued in the team, and he'll come with us, he'll be with us. Regarding the decision, I will not give my opinion."
Erik ten Hag has named the exact same starting XI that took Madrid close in the first leg, meaning former Southampton winger Dusan Tadic graces the Bernabeu, while Frenkie de Jong also features from the start ahead of his move to Barcelona in the summer.
TEAM NEWS - HEADLINES
The big news emanating from the Bernabeu is that there is NO GARETH BALE in the Real Madrid starting line-up. The Welshman is included on the substitutes' bench following his agent's claims that treatment of his player from supporters has been "nothing short of a disgrace."
Lucas Vazquez is preferred to Bale on the left while Nacho comes in for the suspended Sergio Ramos at the back.
Ajax have not just a mountain to climb, but a particularly arduous one at that - to steel Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's description of the task facing his Manchester United team in Paris tomorrow night.
It hasn't stopped the fans travelling full of belief, and the side will look sharp at least, in black and amber this evening.
AJAX FANS TAKE OVER MADRID
It's fair to say there were one or two Ajax supporters enjoying themselves in Madrid's central square earlier today ahead of this big clash between two of Europe's footballing leviathans...
