FULL TIME: Zenit St Petersburg 1-2 Borussia Dortmund
Club Brugge have just hit the crossbar against Lazio, but the Italians are edging closer to qualification. Meanwhile, this one is just about done. Zenit are giving it one last go.
Is there one last chance left in this match for Zenit St Petersburg? They should have scored more than just one given the opportunities they have had. They will rue the misses.
There will be four minutes of stoppage time played at the end of the match.
- OffThorgan HazardBorussia Dortmund
- OnAnsgar KnauffBorussia Dortmund
Knauff comes on for the closing stages. Dortmund are edging closer and closer here...
Dzyuba wants a spot kick! The big man goes down inside the penalty area. He is appealing to the referee, but nothing is given. Dzyuba had the strength to stay on his feet there.
- OffMagomed OzdoevFC Zenit
- OnDanil KrugovoyFC Zenit
Zenit throwing everything they have got into this. Dortmund will have some defending to do.
- OffMalcomFC Zenit
- OnVyacheslav KaravaevFC Zenit
Another change for the home side. Is there time for Zenit to respond? Time is running out.
Zenit have nothing to lose here and so they are going for it. They are already out of European competition for the season. They are only playing for their pride this evening.
The finish from Witsel wasn't exactly clean. It was like he actually kicked the ground before kicking the ball and that fooled the goalkeeper somewhat. Kerzhakov didn't have a read on it.
Things have fully swung around for Dortmund as Club Brugge have scored an equaliser against Lazio. If that holds, Dortmund will finish top of the group with only one point!
- GoalAxel WitselBorussia Dortmund
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Zenit St Petersburg 1 Borussia Dortmund 2 (79 mins - Axel Witsel). WITSEL! Dortmund have turned this around! Witsel took the shot early, he caught the goalkeeper by surprise and the ball is in the back of the net at the near post! Is that the goal that sends Dortmund through as group winners?
Good chance! Reus drives down the right side and gets the cross into the middle, but Moukoko couldn't control it and the opportunity disappears for the Bundesliga side!
- OffLukasz PiszczekBorussia Dortmund
- OnDan-Axel ZagadouBorussia Dortmund
And Zagadou also comes on for the final 15 minutes to shore up the Dortmund defence.
- OffMats HummelsBorussia Dortmund
- OnJadon SanchoBorussia Dortmund
Here come a couple more changes for Dortmund with Sancho introduced off the bench.
Indeed, Zenit are now enjoying a better period of play. A cross just went across the face of goal and there was nobody for the Russian side gambling to get on the end of it!
So what's the game plan for Zenit now? Keep in mind they are already out of European competition. This is for pride. So surely they just all out to try and grab a second goal?
- OffYaroslav RakytskyiFC Zenit
- OnDejan LovrenFC Zenit
It should be noted that Lovren came off the bench for Zenit just moments before the goal!
Another group update...
That goal changes the complexion of this match and potentially of Group F as a whole. As things stand, Lazio would still finish in top spot as they are beating Club Brugge 2-1.
- GoalLukasz PiszczekBorussia Dortmund
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Zenit St Petersburg 1 Borussia Dortmund 1 (68 mins - Lukasz Piszczek). It's an equaliser with just over 20 minutes left to play! Hummels stabbed a shot towards goal, Kerzhakov made the save low down, but nobody in blue could react quickly enough and Piszczek slams home!
Shot from Bellingham! The English teenager lines up the strike from 25 yards out, but that was always rising as soon as it left his boot and Zenit survive again. Pretty comfortable.
Dortmund need to step things up in the final 25 minutes of this match. They simply haven't done enough with the ball in the attacking third of the match. Very toothless.
- OffDaler KuzyaevFC Zenit
- OnWendelFC Zenit
And a second change for the home side with Wendel introduced off the bench.
- OffSebastian DriussiFC Zenit
- OnArtem DzyubaFC Zenit
On comes the big man for Zenit. Dzyuba gives the home side someone to hit with crosses.
- OffJulian BrandtBorussia Dortmund
- OnGiovanni ReynaBorussia Dortmund
A second Dortmund change and Reyna is on for the final 30 minutes.
- OffFelix PasslackBorussia Dortmund
- OnYoussoufa MoukokoBorussia Dortmund
An historic moment as Moukoko becomes the youngest player to ever feature in a Champions League game!
Shot from Bellingham! That was a half-chance for the English teenager, but he didn't quite catch the shot and Zenit survive. It looks like Dortmund are about to make some changes.
Malcom is coming on to a game in this second half. The Brazilian has just one goal in 13 appearances for Zenit this season, but he is causing Dortmund a lot of problems.
While Borussia Dortmund are already sure of their place in the last 16, a defeat here would prompt more questions of Favre. Results recently have started a debate about his job security.
Good move! Malcom cuts inside off the right, plays the pass to Kuzyaev on the overlapping run, but he attempts to pick out Azmoun instead of taking on the shot himself!
Bellingham has been one of Borussia Dortmund's best performers this evening. The English teenager is at least giving Favre something different through the centre of the pitch.
Zenit are quite happy to play on the counter attack at the moment. They are sitting deep, absorbing Dortmund's possession and then hitting out on the rapid counter attack.
PICTURE: Passlack down the left for Dortmunf
You would have expected it would be Dortmund who would emerge the better team for the start of the second, but it's actually Zenit who are pressing to score the next goal.
How has that not gone in?! Zenit have the Dortmund goal under siege at the start of the second half, with Burki called upon to make a couple save. Azmoun should have found the net from close range!
Sancho was out on the pitch warming up during the half time break. However, there is no sign of the England international for the start of the second half. A little strange!
The second half is under way! Zenit have a 1-0 lead over Dortmund in this Champions League Group F game!
What did you make of the first half? Does Favre need to make changes to his Borussia Dortmund side to turn around this game? If so what changes should he make? Tweet me!
- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Zenit St Petersburg 1-0 Borussia Dortmund. The Bundesliga side were building up a head of steam towards the end of the half there, but it's the Russians who have the lead.
Off the post! Inches away from being an equaliser right on the stroke of half time! Reus got his shot away from 18 yards out, but his effort comes back off the inside of the far post!
Bellingham should have scored! That was a good chance for Dortmund to find the back of the net! Schulz's cross into the middle found Bellingham, but the teenager heads over the crossbar from eight yards out!
Can Borussia Dortmund find an equaliser before the break? They have struggled to create opportunities, but they have great attacking quality on the pitch. Need to do more with it.
Zenit are doing a better job of keeping the ball in the opposition half. They have been emboldened by the goal. They have grown into the game after starting rather slowly.
Another group update...
Azmoun has looked very dangerous for Zenit so far this evening. He has struggled for goals recently, but has already found the back of the net against Borussia Dortmund.
Favre will want to see much more from his side in the second half, and before half time as well. Dortmund have been pretty toothless. Have they even tested the Zenit goalkeeper, Kerzhakov?
PICTURE: The hosts have the 1-0 lead
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.... NO! Zenit think they have scored for a second time, with Azmoun breaking in behind and rounding Burki to finish, but the flag was up for offside! Correct decision!
Favre does have options on the bench should he need them in the second half. The obvious one is Sancho, but Reyna has also been in good form recently for the Bundesliga side.
Borussia Dortmund have been the more threatening of the two teams, and they have seen more of the ball, but it's not as if they have created loads of scoring opportunities.
Some of Zenit's treatment of Borussia Dortmund in this first half has been quite rough. Is that a strategy from them? It appears to be working at the moment. Zenit have the advantage.
More news from the other game... it's all happening at the Stadio Olimpico! Immobile has scored from the penalty spot to put Lazio 2-1 up in their game against Club Brugge.
Set piece opportunity! Can gets on the end of a corner kick delivery into the box, but the former Liverpool midfielder couldn't direct his header on target. That was a half chance for Can.
Borussia Dortmund have threatened at times this evening, but they have lacked the final product in the attacking third. It's just breaking down for them at the last moment.
PICTURE: Zenit have the early lead
This is fantastic passing from Borussia Dortmund, but you just get the sense they are lacking cutting edge and presence in the attacking third this evening without Haaland.
News from the other game... Club Brugge weren't behind for long! They have levelled things up against Lazio! Keep in mind that they can also qualify for the Champions League last 16 tonight!
Tipped around the post! Good response from Dortmund, with Hazard cutting inside to open up the angle! His low shot was a good one, but the goalkeeper gets down well to make the save.
That was poor defending by Borussia Dortmund. They allowed Driussi to have too much space in the penalty area. By the time they got defenders to him, it was already too late.
- GoalSebastian DriussiFC Zenit
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Zenit St Petersburg 1 (18 mins - Sebastian Driussi) Borussia Dortmund 0. Zenit have taken the lead! Azmoun's cut back from the right finds Driussi and his low shot is deflected into the back of the net past Burki! That would have been straight at the Dortmund keeper had it not been for the deflection!
Malcom takes aim! That was a decent shooting opportunity for the former Barcelona winger on the edge of the box, but he leans back and the strike flashes over the crossbar!
Of course, there is a huge benefit to finishing top of the group in the Champions League. Favre will be desperate for his side to pick up a victory here to make their passage easier.
News from the other game... Lazio have taken the lead in their Group F game against Club Brugge. As things stand, Dortmund would finish second behind the Serie A outfit.
Header over! Witsel's freekick into the area is headed over by Reus. That was always going to be a difficult one for him to get on target never mind beat the Zenit goalkeeper.
- Yellow cardSardar AzmounFC Zenit
Azmoun picks up the first yellow card of the game for a foul on Can.
Shot on goal! Brandt gets the effort away from outside the area after a strange corner kick, but the German international's strike is blocked before it could reach the Zenit target.
Schulz earns the corner! The Dortmund man gets around the outside and cuts back the pass from the byline, but he didn't have anyone other than Reus in the middle to pick out!
As I mentioned before kick off, Dortmund are already sure of their place in the last 16, but they have yet to secure top spot in the group. That's what is up for grabs for them.
Favre doesn't look happy with his players for allowing that Zenit opportunity. There is space to exploit in behind the Dortmund backline and that's what Zenit will be trying to do.
He was offside! Kuzyaev was played in behind the Borussia Dortmund backline, he got the shot away from a tight angle and the ball flashed over the bar. But the flag was raised for offside.
Bellingham wins the ball back high up the pitch. That's something the English teenager offers Favre that other midfield options don't. The youngster is very active in the high press.
Dortmund have taken an early grip of the game. They are seeing plenty of the ball, zipping the passes around the midfield. Zenit are pegged back inside their own half right now.
Witsel picks up the ball for the first time in the game and gets a round of applause from the home fans. This is a place he knows well. The Belgian spent four years at Zenit St Petersburg.
As mentioned in the build up to kick off, Haaland is missing for Dortmund this evening. It remains to be seen how Favre will line up his attack without the Norwegian centre forward.
- 1st Half
The match is under way! It's Zenit St Petersburg against Borussia Dortmund in this Champions League Group F fixture!
Okay, here we go. We are just moments away from this match getting under way. Kick off coming up.
Dortmund still need a positive result to claim top spot in Group F. Can they get that result?
Not long until kick off in Russia. There are fans inside the stadium for this game, which is always a welcome sight.
It was a tight encounter between the two teams earlier in the group, Sancho and Haaland scoring late on for Borussia Dortmund. Neither player is in the starting lineup tonight, though.
It's been a poor European campaign for Zenit. They have already been eliminated from European competition for the 2020/21 season. They will want to end on a high, though.
Will we get another glimpse of Moukoko this evening? The teenager has been hyped up as Borussia Dortmund's next big thing and recently made his first team debut for the club.
Of course, there's no Haaland for Borussia Dortmund tonight after the Norwegian striker picked up an injury, although it's hoped that injury isn't just as bad as initially feared. Who's up top tonight?
