What an extraordinary game of football! Porto are through to the quarter-finals, losing 3-2 on the night but progressing thanks to away goals with the score 4-4 on aggregate. Wow. Just wow. You don’t get much more in a game than that! Thanks very much for spending it with me, I’ll catch you all here again tomorrow for the small matter of PSG vs Barcelona!

PORTO ARE THROUGH!

120'

A free-kick into the Porto box is flicked on and brilliantly clawed away by the keeper. The move stays alive and there’s a dramatic spell of penalty-box pinball as Porto throw bodies everywhere, but the ball stays out and surely that is it now.

120'

One last chance…

120'

Juve appeal for a penalty but nothing is given and rightly so. Has time run out for the Italian giants?

118'

What on earth is going on! Rabiot dispatches a brilliant header from a corner and it’s 4-4 on aggregate with Juventus needing a goal to progress. Porto, as it stands, are going through on away goals.

GOOOAAALLL!!! SURELY NOT?! RABIOT PULLS ONE BACK!

116'

The free-kick was miles out, but Oliveira struck it low and with great power, sending it under the shambles of a Juventus wall, through the legs of Ronaldo. Szczesny still should have saved it, but couldn’t quite get a strong enough hand to it and the ball snuck in off the post. 2-2 on the night and are Porto going through?! It sure looks like it!

GOOOAAALLL!!! OH MY WORD! OLIVEIRA WITH THE GOAL!

114'

Oliveira wins a foul inside the Juve half with a lovely bit of skill and it’s a chance for Porto to get some numbers forward.

113'

Morata is completely unmarked on the edge of the box, but he makes a poor connection with his first-time shot and it’s straight into the arms of the keeper. That was a great chance.

111'

Porto counter, but a shot from the edge of the box takes a big deflection and doesn’t threaten the goal. There was a hint of a handball inside the box during the move as Cuadrado slipped, but nothing was given and VAR clearly didn’t see enough to intervene.

110'

What superb defending! Mbemba puts his body on the line to deny Kulusevski from close range. The two central defenders have been magnificent for Porto, they really have.

108'

Pepe is again there with a crucial header as Juventus put in a dangerous cross. The pressure is really starting to build, and you would put good money on the home side creating at least one decent chance to win it before we get to penalties.

105'

The outstanding Marega has put a real shift in, but he doesn't have much left in the tank and is replaced by Toni Martinez.

HT

That's the end of the first period of extra time. Are we heading to penalties?

104'

Even now Porto are trying to build attacks, it’s not a matter of hitting it long and hoping, there is still very much a structure to the approach.

Ronaldo goes down in the box as he meets the ball fractionally after the goalkeeper. It’s a crunching challenge from the stopper, but he got the ball and no penalty is given.

100'

Chiesa is on a booking and makes sure to get his appeals in early after a clash in midfield.

99'

That’s a stunning move by Porto from a corner as Corona spins into space on the byline and puts in a great ball, but Marega is put under huge pressure with his header from close range and can’t beat Szczesny.

97'

Pepe makes a good tackle to end another Juve attack. The Porto skipper has been an inspirational presence at the heart of defence all evening, keeping calm and composed while still putting his body on the line when needed. It is of great credit to the former Real Madrid man that he has largely shut Ronaldo out of the game for much of the evening, and few defenders manage that.

95'

It could be a bit of a siege of the Porto penalty box during extra-time. Their legs are starting to look a bit tired after so long with a man down.

94'

Cuadrado whips in a lovely cross and it almost falls to Ronaldo on the rebound on the edge of the box.

FT

That's it, the game is heading to an extra half hour. Strap yourselves in, we're here for the long haul.

90+4'

Morata wins a corner for Juventus. Is this the last chance to seal the tie in normal time?

90+3'

How close is that! Cuadrado weaves into the box from the right and crashes a stunner of a shot that hammers off the bar and bounces away to safety. What a hit!

90+1'

There will be five minutes of added time. A goal will win it at this stage for either team, otherwise we’re heading for an extra half hour.

90'

Morata tucks a shot away off the post, but the flag is up and the goal won’t stand. VAR gives it a check and confirms that he was offside.

88'

Rabiot and Chiesa link up dangerously on the edge of the box, but it won’t quite fall for the Italian to get an effort away.

87'

A great cross is swung right towards the head of Ronaldo, who is arriving at full speed, but it takes a touch at the crucial moment to send it away from the Portuguese star.

85'

Marega swivels in the box, but his shot can only find the side-netting.

83'

Porto are trying to settle this in the 90, presumably because with a man disadvantage they won’t have the legs for extra-time, but Szczesny produced a strong save.

81'

Chiesa goes so close to the hat-trick, but is denied at a tight angle by a terrific save by Marchesin.

78'

Ronaldo! The main man has his first true sighting of goal of the evening, but sends his effort wide of the far post. He rages at the sky and really should have done better there. It remains 2-1 on the night and 3-3 on aggregate.

76'

A goal either way will win this and you can sense the nervous energy building out on the pitch in Turin.

73'

We are under 20 minutes from extra-time. But you suspect there will be chances for Juve to win it before the 90 is up.

It’s been an absolute blinder of a game this, but you have to feel a bit for Porto. They are camped deep in their own half now, stunned by that two-goal salvo and with just ten men to try and rescue the tie.

HT

The half-time whistle goes and Juventus have some serious work to do if they are to avoid a Champions League exit tonight. Porto are well worth their lead on the night after an impressive counter-attacking display, and as it stands Juventus need two goals to even get back on level pegging in the tie.

45'

Oliveira pings a shot towards goal but it’s a reasonably comfortable save for Szczesny. We’re into four minutes of added time at the end of the half.

44'

Ronaldo gesticulates as another long ball goes nowhere near him and his cleared. The service for him tonight has been pretty poor so far.

42'

Here come Porto again on the break, but Szczesny comes well out of his box to meet a long ball on the volley and clear. He’s a confident guy the former Arsenal man, you’ve got to give him that.

39'

Porto are defending really well so far and this time it’s Mbemba who makes the crucial intervention, heading behind with Morata lurking over his shoulder.

36'

Juve put together a long and patient phase of play, but the final cross into the box from Chiesa is a poor one, straight into the arms of the goalkeeper, with Ronaldo waiting at the far side of the box. It’s fair to say that the veteran is not impressed.

33'

Pepe suffered a cut above the eyebrow, but he’s been patched up and will carry on.

31'

The medics are on after a clash of heads in the Porto box. Fingers crossed that everyone’s going to be okay. We'll have a brief pause.

27'

What a game this is! Morata does beautifully to back off his marker at the back post and control, but his effort on goal is well saved. Ronaldo looks a bit frustrated that the ball wasn’t played across to him, but a glance at the replays suggest that the pass was never on and Morata really had to have a crack from there.

Sergio Oliveira calcia il rigore durante Juventus-Porto - Champions League 2020/2021 - Getty Images
25'

Now it’s Otavio who has a crack, forcing Szczesny into another save. That’s Porto’s seventh attempt of the night already.

24'

And again Porto counter. The ball is sprayed wide to Corona, but his shot is straight into the midriff of the Juve keeper.

23'

Porto counter again as Oliveira streams forward down the inside left channel. The visitors have been so impressive with the intensity of their play tonight. They are organised in defence but are jumping on any hint of an opportunity to cause the home defence problems.

21'

The onus is really on Juve to respond now. That penalty cancels out the away goal advantage that Juve had and they are going to have to commit numbers forward… while being away that it could leave them extremely vulnerable on the break.

17'

Oh my! Taremi goes down in the box and it’s a penalty to Porto! That looks reasonably soft, but it probably is a foul and VAR agrees with referee Bjorn Kuipers.

13'

Porto throw numbers forward again, but there’s no threat to Szczesny’s goal on this occasion. You do feel like Juventus will slowly start to take control of the match in terms of where and how it is played, but Porto are clearly going to grab whatever attacking opportunities they have - Sérgio Conceição’s side are not going to die wondering, that’s for sure!

10'

This match is being played at a blistering tempo, with both teams committing numbers forward. Juve are edging the possession stats, but it’s far from one-way traffic in terms of goal threat.

7'

Porto go close twice in quick succession as first Bonucci clears a goalbound shot and then the follow-up by Taremi clips the bar on its way over. What a start to this game!

4

That’s a top save by Marchesin as Cuadrado swings in a dangerous cross and Morata stings the goalkeeper’s palms with an effort from close range. That should have been the opener for Juve and the game has started at a very sprightly tempo.

3'

Just like in the first leg it is Porto who start the brighter and Uribe shoots wide from the edge of the box with a chance that the visitors created far too easily.

  • 1st Half
1'

Juventus get the game underway, kitted out in their usual white with black stripes.

Always gets me that anthem. Every time.

THE CHAAAAMMMMPPPPIIIIIIOOOOOOOONS!

Here we go then, the players emerge from the tunnel at the Juventus Stadium and the choir are warming up their vocal chords for that memorable pre-game music.

Whoever progresses from this match will have to wait a while to find out who they face next, as the draw for the quarter-finals is still ten days away. It’ll be held at UEFA’s HQ in Nyon on Friday 19 March, with the ties scheduled to be played over the first two weeks of April.

Juve have a strong home record in Europe, winning eight and drawing two of their last 12 home knockout matches. However, the two defeats in that run have both come in the past three years – a 3-0 loss to Real Madrid in 2018 and a 2-1 defeat to Ajax in 2019.

The stats aren’t in Porto’s favour tonight, however. They have failed to win any of their last 13 away games in the Champions League knockout stages (drawing four and losing nine) and the last three times they have led a tie after the first leg they have gone on to be eliminated.

" Our history in this competition is very rich. We've prepared in the best way to get a positive result that, in a club like FC Porto, can only be the victory. We're going to play in the image of who we are as a team and try to win it. We go with everything to get the qualification."

Porto were really well organised in the first leg and caused plenty of problems with their aggressive high press, particularly in the first half. And Conceicao has vowed that his team will stick to their guns tonight.

Tonight’s visitors Porto face a similar domestic situation to their Italian hosts. Sergio Conceicao’s side trail Sporting by ten points, with the Lisbon club looking to end almost two decades of Porto and Benfica’s combined dominance of the league. There is still time for Porto to mount a title charge, but European competition (as with Juventus) offers a welcome chance to experience excitement elsewhere.

Juve aren’t enjoying the best of seasons and face the prospect of losing out on the Serie A title for the first time in a decade. Pirlo’s side are currently ten points behind league leaders Inter, albeit with a game in hand. If anything that makes this evening (and the Champions League in general) even more important for the Bianconeri.

Cristiano Ronaldo

" Cristiano is fine. These are his matches. He's fired up," Pirlo said. "He's been able to rest and can't wait. We know the pressure is on us, but we don't hide. We have what it takes to go through, but we don't underestimate our opponents. However, we are Juventus and have to think about qualifying."

Obviously ahead of a Juventus tie it’s Cristiano Ronaldo who is central to much of the pre-game talk, and the 36-year-old was handed a rest against Lazio at the weekend. There was speculation that he was dropped, but manager Andrea Pirlo was quick to dismiss such an idea.

Porto stung Juventus inside the first minute of both halves of the first leg and caused the Italian champions plenty of difficulties throughout. But Juve did bag themselves a crucial away goal and will fancy their chances of progressing this evening.

19:00

Good evening. It’s Champions League time again and tonight sees Juventus try and overturn a 2-1 deficit against Porto with a place in the quarter-finals at stake. I’ll bring you plenty of build-up before the game kicks off, and then full live coverage from 20:00. It should be a good one!
