FT: Liverpool 0-2 Atalanta. Goals from Ilicic and Gosens surprise a lacklustre Liverpool and leave the Reds with a bit more work to do before they can secure qualification from Group D.
Two minutes added.
De Roon booked.
LIVERPOOL CHANGE: Minamino on for Matip.
ATALANTA CHANGE: Miranchuk on for Pessina.
Jurgen Klopp v Italian clubs: Pld 13 career games, won 5, drawn 1, lost 7…. It looks like it’ll be eight losses in 14 after this one ends.
Zapata spins in the box but flashes a poor effort well over the bar after the visitors had caused problems down the left.
Lots will be said about Klopp's team selection and rightly so - but all of his players have looked off it tonight.
ATALANTA CHANGE: Gosens off, Mojica on.
ATALANTA CHANGE: Zapata on for Ilicic.
Liverpool are probing now, but it's going to take a special recovery from here.
As it stands: Liverpool 9 pts, Ajax 7, Atalanta 7, FC Midtjylland 0.
GOAL! The visitors make it two! Gosens side foots home a knock down following another Gomez cross from the left.
LIVERPOOL CHANGES: Firmino, Robertson, Jota, Fabinho on. Tsimikas, Wijnaldum, Salah, Origi off.
GOAL! Ilicic lurks at the far post and times his run well to fly in and stab Gomez's superb cross beyond Alisson.
Tsimikas booked.
Klopp has seen enough. He's making LOTS of changes!
DID YOU KNOW? Liverpool have played once before in Europe on this date. In 1964 they wore their all-red strip for the first time as they defeated Anderlecht 3-0 at home in the European Cup.
As it stands in Group D: Liverpool 10 pts, Ajax 7pts, Atalanta 5, FC Midtjylland 0.
Gomez spins and looks to send Ilicic free, but Alisson comes flying off his line and smothers at his feet near the edge of his area.
Liverpool haven't really raised it in this second half. Klopp's HT haven't worked their magic. How long until he changes?
Make that 2-0 to Ajax.
Gomez cuts in from the left and lets fly from 25 yards, but Alisson is alert and easily gathers.
LATEST: Ajax are 1-0 up against the Danes.
KICK OFF! Liverpool get us back underway and will attack the Kop end in the second period.
HT: Liverpool 0-0 Atalanta.
One minute added.
Liverpool work a short free kick down the left. Tsimikas drills it into the box and it falls for Salah on the far side. The Egyptian takes a touch out of his feet and then arrows a rising shot wide from a narrowing angle.
Liverpool’s next goal will be their 50th at Anfield in the European Cup under Klopp. They will have to have a shot first, mind you.
Ilicic goes down in the Liverpool box. The referee pauses for thought ever so briefly and then turns away. VAR agrees - no penalty.
Elsewhere in this group, Ajax and FC Midtjylland are still goalless.
SHOTS: Liverpool 0-4 Atalanta. The visitors have had 51 per cent of the possession and have looked the more assured.
STAT: Atalanta have won their last three away games in the competition, scoring at least three goals in each.
More frustration for Gosens as he fails to collect Ilicic's exquisite pass inside the Liverpool area. That was a really opportunity there. Gasperini is not impressed on the touchline!
No doubt that the away side have asked all of the questions so far. Liverpool continue to creak as the Italians probe.
Ilicic ounces on a weak defensive header from Tsimikas' but arrows his first-time shot into the Kop.
Can this makeshift Liverpool defence keep the visitors at bay? The last time the Reds kept clean sheets in four successive European games was in 2017-18. They have only achieved such a sequence twice before.
Liverpool haven't got out of first gear yet, which isn't surprising given the changes. Atalanta will be keen to show they are better than the 5-0 loss the suffered at home too.
Play resumes and Gosens is deemed fit to return.
Play halted as Gosens receives treatment after taking a knock defending a Liverpool set piece.
Liverpool give the ball away too cheaply in their own half again. This time Gomez benefits, but his low shot from just outside the box flashes a few yards wide of the far post.
Super stop from Alisson! The Brazilian does well with a big strong arm at his near post after Gosens had hit a thumping shot from the left side of the area.
LIVERPOOL v ITALIAN SIDES: The Reds have met Italian clubs 13 times at Anfield. The Merseysiders have won eight and lost on four occasions to Genoa (1992), Roma (2001), Fiorentina (2009) and Udinese (2012).
Salah gifts the ball to Ilicic with a sloppy pass inside his own half. The Atalanta forward wastes little time turning and firing in a 25-yard shot that flashes past Alisson's right-hand post.
Liverpool’s record in European Cup/Champions League: Played 220 - won 126, drawn 45, lost 49. In contrast Atalanta have played just 47 in Europe overall.
KICK OFF! Atalanta get us underway after the players pay their respects to Diego Maradona. RIP Diego.
Milner is the 23rd man in Liverpool's history to play 50 European games. It also sees him become the oldest Reds player to achieve the milestone aged 34 years 326 days, beating the record set by Kenny Dalglish in 1984 (34 years 51 days).
DID YOU KNOW? Josip Ilicic has notched a third of Atalanta's away Champions League goals with four of their 12. He is the only player to have netted more than once away from home in the competition.
As kick off approaches, let’s take a closer look at the Liverpool line up. No real surprise to see Mo Salah return. The forward has posted a negative test result after missing the win over Leicester. He had previously confirmed positive for coronavirus while on international duty with Egypt. Elsewhere in the team ,Klopp has shuffled his pack in defence. Matip is joined by youngsters Neco and Rhys Williams while Kostas Tsimikas features at left back. Divock Origi gets a run out in attack. Meanwhile, Atalanta have made six changes from the 5-0 home loss to the Reds a few weeks back.
Joel Matip on Atalanta: "Their biggest threat is their attacking line and they have performed great in Serie A and they are a threat for every team. So we have to be prepared and be ready to fight in every second of the game. Otherwise, we will get a serious problem. So, we know what we need to do."
Some more from Klopp. This time on Maradona.
Gian Piero Gasperini, Atalanta coach: “It will be a very difficult match against Liverpool, we will meet a great side. They are doing extraordinary things. Right now it is a great achievement for us being able to play in the Champions League. Facing Liverpool is an achievement regardless of the result, but we would like to give a good performance."
Jurgen Klopp: "Atalanta are a threat even without a point to prove. We were exceptional (in Italy). We did everything right and it all came together. They're a top team with a special way to play. I expect problems in this game."
The latest gossip from the continent claims Liverpool are stepping up their search for a new defender in January. Check out today's Euro Papers video below.
