Shaw slides in and curls a leg around Ilicic, who goes down. It looked a decent challenge, but the ref gives a free-kick which goes short, Ilicic looking to slide Pasalic in behind, but Maguire is there to clean up.

Pasalic volleys a ball over the top of the United defence, seeking Zapata. He puts too much on it, but Maguire had an arm up for an offside that looked plausible.

United look dangerous down their left. Shaw and Rashford have a nice little partnership, and though the former has started the season poorly, the latter is now fit and very sharp indeed.

Shaw reads a loose pass from Koopmeiners and steals possession, driving forward and finding Rashford, who dips inside his man but can't quite find a shooting lane, seeing his effort blocked. Pogba then picks up the ball, finding McTominay, whose shot is deflected ... and it wrongfoots Musso ... but trickles into the post and Atalanta clear!

I think United have tweaked their 3-4-1-2 to a 3-4-2-1 - Rashford isn't playing up with Ronaldo but behind him to the left, with Bruno to the right.
3'
Ilicic spreads right to Zappacpsta, but United have loads of men back and Atalanta can't find a way through so switch to the other flank, where United shut them down again.
2'
Ilicic gets into a decent position not far outside the United box, then falls over.

Ronaldo nips inside Maehle and has options, but from 25 yards he opts to shoot ... straight at Musso.

Both teams take the knee. Black lives matter.

The ground should be absolutely jumping. "The away end hasn’t been rebuilt and is proper old school with no roof," whatsapps my mate.

Paul Scholes, who, of course, called United's gubbing by Liverpool, says that the XI on Saturday looked much more solid even before kick-off. Rio Ferdinand agrees, noting that in hard aways, he focused on keeping it tight because he knew his team always had the firepower to get goals.

Solskjaer tells BT his team need to start properly and says that Bailly has played for his country and trained well so he's ready. He sticks with the formation he used at the weekend because it worked well and there was a good balance to the team; he's hoping to see the creative skills of Pogba and Fernandes.
On Rashford, he says he's not fit enough to play 90 minutes in every game but he's done well since coming back from injury, then goes on to praise Atalanta who are quick, physical, and good at set-pieces. He thinks United should be able to deal with them though, noting that this is the tallest team he's ever put out.

A mate of mine is in the away end.

Obviously it's fair to note that Tuchel is a better coach than Solskjaer, but Solskjaer has better attacking players and more options on the bench too.

On which point, there are similarities between what United are now doing and what Thomas Tuchel is doing at Chelsea. No doubt he drills and all that, but ultimately, he's got three centre-backs, two midfielders in front, and wing-backs who are defenders (usually). That solidity allows his front players to get on with it, and while they don't score look as threatening as they should, they're scoring often enough to be European champions and league leaders.
