Sky News editor Mark Kleinman revealed the worrying news for Aston Villa fans less than two weeks after their club suffered defeat in football’s most-lucrative match, the Championship play-off final.
The news came after the Midlands club revealed CEO Keith Wyness had been suspended.
Villa announced the news of Wyness’ suspension on their website. The statement read:
Aston Villa Football Club can confirm that Chief Executive, Keith Wyness, has been suspended by the club with immediate effect. Owner and Chairman, Dr Tony Xia will assume the role until further notice. There will be no further comment from the club at this time."
Wyness, who has previously served as CEO of Everton and Aberdeen, was appointed Villa chief executive in 2016, the year they dropped into the Championship.
Reports suggest Villa's bill was due to be paid last week but the club has now been given an extension by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs, though the grace period to make the payment could be as short as next week.
